Alexander C. Anderson and Elizabeth Bertram had four children that I can find from searching the BC Archives, Pilot Family Search and Beta Family Search sites:

William Henry b. 1889 Nanaimo; m. 1914 Margaret Mary Mccuish (b. 1890 Nanaimo); d. 1973 Nanaimo
Agnes Estella b. 1892 Nanaimo; m. 1914 John Henry Cooper; d. 1958 Nanaimo
Edith Marion b. 1895 Nanaimo; m. 1923 Nicholas Wright; d. 1964 Nanaimo
--they had a daughter Norah Elizabeth Wright who died shortly after birth in 1926
Margaret Elizabeth b. 1897; d. 1897 Nanaimo

I will look these up in the next couple of weeks.
Depending on where they are all buried, I may be able to find their grave sites as I live in Nanaimo!

John Jr. still can't find him in 1911...Nor son? Maybe he's with mom in U.S.
Here they are in 1891 with John a Plainer (s.i.c. :P ) in a saw mill
 http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=57250

It seems odd that he is a patient although outside a hospital setting in 1901, ( see reply#10) although the next person does seem to say nurse. Perhaps he sought some alternate healing/medicine for an ailment, although the head of household still is a "labourer"Maybe he is under the direct care of the nurse?...

I just found him as a "millman" in 1898 voter's list  so perhaps like "plainer" we just have a bogus word for his occupation? http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canbc/vote1898/votebe.htm
Now that we know from the next reply that son was working as a miner,  he may have switched jobs just before the census...so have removed both images...

In 1901 census John is a patient and there seems to be a lot of Chinese men as well. I had guessed that whatever was wrong with him-may have led to his demise!
George Norris Bertram his son was a mining Inspector and was killed in a gas explosion in Mine No6 at Cumberland in 1917. Someone sent me the report for the newspaper at that time.
I'n not a home just now ( on offshore flotel in Invergordon dock in the Highlands) so I hope I got these details correct.

I found this site of the heritage walks in Cumberland, BC.  It is quite interesting with lots of wonderful photos and bits of the history of the area.

As it looks like John Bertram & Mary E Norris divorced between 1901 & 1908. Did B.C. keep divorce records at that time?
So far I have not found anything.    Rgds. George
