Parish Records - St. Margaret's, Leicester
« on: Tuesday 23 November 10 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone happen to have acces to the parish records for St. Margaret's in Leicester.

Looking for a baptism of Alfred Castle Brackenbury - born in  December of 1900. Trying to find out who his parents were.

Also looking for the parish burial record of the same - buried 14 JUN.1901 - again, looking for any mention of parents.

Thanks very much!

Thanks - Not sure what records you're looking at - I have the cemetery records you gave, but I'm looking for the actual parish records of the batism and funeral.

Possibly he was not baptized or buried from St. Margaret's - again, I'm not sure where they attended church, but in 1901 they were living on Upper Brunswick St in Leicester - present day Brunswick St (don;t know if it's the same street) seems to be near St. Matthews, but I'm not sure that's an actual church or just the name of an area in Leicester.

Greeting’s Again. ….

I  have St:Margaret’s Baptisms 1615 ~ 1920. ( 52.000 Baptisms )

That’s why I can confirm Alfred was not Baptised there………
Seeing his age of only 7 months at death
then maybe he was still to be Baptised ?

Regarding actual Parish registers……….
again services before burials at Welford Road or any Civic Cemeteries are not usually recorded within these registers .

Re UPPER Brunswick Street….
This was a continuation of Brunswick Street
Finishing at Catherine Street before the Railway Bridge.

Upper Brunswick St. is under present day Everest Court & Kashmir Road

This whole area was and is still called St: Matthew’s Estate.
Taking it’s name from the Church of St: Matthew’s
Which stood on the corner of Chester Street / Melville Street
Renamed Montreal Road / Taylor Street on present day maps.

H iMike,

Thanks very much! I kind of thought maybe the street continued where more modern streets now stand.

Any idea when the church of St. Matthew's discontinued being used? I'm wondering if perhaps the baptism and funeral took place from there rather than St. Margaret's. In looking at a map, it seems that if St. Matthew's was still being used it would have only been a few minutes walk away - St. Margaret's would have been within walking distance, but a much further walk.

Again, thanks for any insights you can provide!

Was able to find a bit more on St. Matthew's - Looks like it did indeed exist back in 1900-1901. Not used much in the 1960's and finally demolished in 1988.

Anyone know where the parish records may have gone??! I suspect this is the church I'm looking for since it was only a few minutes walking distance from Upper Brunswick Street in 1900.

Thanks!

Greeting’s Again. …….

St: Matthew’s Parish Registers will be on Fiches
and held at the Record Office at Wigston.

In 1960’s ~ 70’s
St: Matthews Estate was under yet another re development
With the present day Inner Ring Road cutting through
And modern blocks of Flats put up
where the old back to back terrace housing used to be. ……

Thnanks again, Mike - yeah, I did hear back from the Records Office; they're checking to see if they have the record. I was hoping the diocese would hold it but it looks like in England everything seems to get shipped off to one archive office  ;)

Hi All

I see from a posting a while back that Mike has access to the St Margaret's Leicester parish records, would you know if there is a Thomas Knight baptism about 1828ish please.
