Edward Patch Marriage at Jersey c.1845
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 22:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I hope someone can help.

I'm looking for a marriage between Edward Patch and Caroline Churchill sometime between 1841 and 1848 in Jersey, probably around St Helier.

Edward Patch was born in England some time around 1816, and Caroline also born in England (Chaffcombe, Somerset) about 1826.

I'd love to find out if the marriage record holds any clue as to Edward's parents or where he came from in England, if a marriage record exists that is!

Edward Patch died between 1862 and 1871 on Jersey, so I'm not sure if a death record would also give any clues as to his origins.

Any snippets of info at all would be very gratefully received :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I can't help with the marriage unfortunately but I notice there is quite a difference in Edwards birthyear between censuses

1851 he is 33 (1817/18)
1861 he is 49 (1811/12)

In 1841 he is 25 but ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs in 1841 so he was between 25-29yrs which fits more with his 1861 birthyear

Crikey, you're right Carole there is a large difference. Thanks for pointing that out to me, I hadn't noticed :D

I will have another look at Caroline's birth date as well, as there seems to be a large age gap that's opened between them now, although that's nothing new ;)

Hi

Here's Caroline - a steady reduction

1851 - 27 so b 1823/24

1861 - 35 so 1825/26

1871 - 44 - so 1826/27

1881 and 1891 - birthyear 1831

So in all - 8yrs difference

Thanks Carole, I tend to go with the earlier dates that the census gives, as she was getting on a bit (bless her) and probably lost track of her age.

Some people on the ancestry website have given her birth date as the 1 October 1826 (probably baptism rather than birth date) but I haven't checked this out with the Somerset parish records that cover Chaffcombe yet. These are not online so it's a trip to the records office when I get a chance.

Thanks again for your help :)

Here's the baptism of one of their children

Baptism 30TH NOVEMBER 1851
Birth 30TH OCTOBER 1851
JAMES EDWARD PATCH
Father  EDWARD
Mother CAROLINE CHURCHILL
Occupation LABOURER
Godparents FATHER, ELISABETH CURBIN and ELISABETH MUSGROVE

Lots more Patches at www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je including a Sarah (1862) who seems to be one of theirs.

If they did marry in Jersey their marriage should be in the records but the Archive is not open until Tues.

Hi

Submitted entries are notorious for their inaccuracy

The 1841 census has 2 entries for Caroline Churchill both b 1826 and in Somerset

One is transcribed as Churchal - parents Joseph & Mary (as the IGI entry) and the family was living in Ilton - Ilminster - Chard
HO107 Piece 929 Book 21 Folio 8 Page 9

The other is correctly transcribed - parents David & Susannah (indexed as Savanah and living in Crewkerne (also Chard RD)
HO107 Piece 940 Book 1 Folio18 Page 6

There is a freebmd entry for a marriage in Chard in 1848 between Caroline Churchill and Thomas Kent but I don't know which Caroline she was

Edward Patch was living in the CI in 1841 so it does seem more likely that they married there

Thanks for the link jeresylily, that was really informative.
I will have to show my father the photos of the Patch family on the website, he might recognise someone.
I really don't mind waiting for the info. It's going to be a while before we can get over to Jersey to do some digging in the archives for ourselves, so I thought I'd ask for a little bit of info, just to keep me ticking along ;D

The Churchills are a bit of a nightmare for me at the moment Carole. There appears to be two Joseph and Mary Churchills at the time of the 1841 Census, one at Ilton and the other at Chaffcombe.
The Caroline at Ilton was baptised in 1822.
I haven't found any parish records for Chaffcombe online, so I can't rule in or out the possibilty that she belongs to Joseph and Mary at Chaffcombe. The information I've accumulated from the trees on Ancestry, I've been unable to confirm. It's going to take a week in the records office to sort it out, and I kick myself for not starting this when we were living in Ilchester!  ::)
