Hannah Jackson
« on: Friday 26 November 10 00:05 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking any information from Ireland on Hannah Jackson.

She was a  Potato Famine Orphan who went to Australia in 1849 on the "New Liverpool" from Plymouth.

Hannah went to Melbourne where she worked before marrying Henry Branston.

On her Australian records her place of birth was put down as Enni, Ireland

Hannah was born about 1835

Hoping that some one can help.

Thanks in advance

Alan

Alan,
http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/orphans/ships_vic.htm See the Irish orphan memorial site .

Site gives her county of birth as Wexford. Place may have been Enniscorthy.

There are four Jacksons listed in Griffiths Valuation

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0aju/

This is a list of heads of household who held/rented land around 1853 for Wexford.

Hannah family may not even be listed especially if she was a famine orphan.

Seems rare enough name in Wexford. Perhaps the first names might ring a bell

Andrew in townland of Kiltrea and Anne in Templeshannon are the two closest to Enniscorthy.

Was Hannah Roman Catholic or Protestant from reading up on the Wexford Jackson's most of them were well off Protestant's.

Hi,
In the famine memorial in Sydney Hannah is listed as Catholic. Also be aware that all the "orphan" girls were not necessarily orphans. The main intention of the workhouse authorities was to relieve themselves of the financial burden of the girls so any could "volunteer" to go especially as the cost was borne by the Australian authorities.
