What is surprising if you check the census records for Julia Lawler with a dad John Lawler... there is not many in the whole of Ireland. Only these. Julia Lawler is not very common at all.

Here is one more thing... sometimes Lawler would be spelt like Lawlor and vice versa.

Here are some births in Dublin for that time frame to a mother with Lawler or Lawlor surname on the Family Search website you might want to check out.

Eccles street is the other side of the city (North Side). It is beside the Mater Hospital. Braithwaite street is South and would be a good walk from Eccles.

Back then I dont know what they were like, I just know on my other side of the family my grandmother went to Eccles Street School. So there was a school on the street but thats all I know.

Blimey this is very exciting

Well doing the cross check with the father was something i had not done, so thank you for that, and the additional Butlers in the 30's are also giving me much to think about here

Just found on Google maps but cannot find number 14!

Many kind thanks

Paul

Eccles st seems to have been extensively redeveloped over the years.. so some of the numbers no longer exist. Based on the OSI maps I'd say number 14 was on the northern side of the street near to where the convent was and to the northwest of the the junction with Dorset st  - see  Eccles St

see the 1890s map (historic 25") for the older buildings. The modern house numbers begin at 39 on the southern side of the street.

Again great map machine, a little slow on my computer but i have now emailed the hospital to see if they have any information when the buildings were destroyed?

Have also emailed Iveagh Trust to see if they have anything

The knowledge you people have is amazing.

I was going to post the same request for information on the south Dublin community forum on Dublin.ie, but if you also all the same people who help there too i don't want to offend, would that be a good idea or not you think?

Kind regards

Paul

...

worth a try, you could find someone that remembers the street first hand...you might bump into me on Dublin.ie also!!!

I'll check the later directories for Eccles st.. but number 14 existed in 1927 :

  14 Mrs. Mary Kent

The Dominican convent is at 18 to 21

It looks like no 14 became part of the school sometime between 1939 and 1949 :

1938 extract for Eccles Street :

  1 - 9 mostly tenements and flats
10 & 11 Bertrand and Rutland School for girls
  12 W. Kennedy, contractor
  13 E. Gilbert
  14 Mrs. Mary Kent
15,16 Dominican college, secondary school for girls

1949 :

  1-6, 7 & 9 tenements and flats
  7 saw mill
10 & 11 Bertrand and Rutland School for girls
  12 W. Kennedy, contractor
  13 R. Gilbert
14,15 Dominican college, secondary school for girls
16 Dominican training college for secondary teachers

Mrs. Kent doesn't seem to be listed at the address on the 1939 electoral register (http://www.dublinheritage.ie) - maybe she owned No. 14 or was the landlady ?

Thank you all for this, i have also emailed the Dominican college as they have a little history on their site, Its given me a lot to think of in only one day so am going to separate these out a little in my mind, and perhaps separate the threads a little (eg thomas Court, Eccles Street bit)

Many thanks for your patience all

Paul
