Hi Dalesman

In order for people to be able to contribute, it would help if you could add some additional info regarding Janet Chapman - dates, who she married, her parents etc. What info do you have so far and what in particular are you trying to find?

Janet Chapman was born on the Hopetoun Estate at No 9? Cottage Woodend, Newton on the 20/7/1868, daughter of James and Janet Chapman.

Janet was first married (1880’s) to a James Herd, Coachman, may have had connections with Aberdour or Dalmeny Estate, he died relatively young, maybe 1880’s?
Janet later married a William McEwan in the 1890’s at Airdrie?  Janet and William both lived and later died at Chapelhall.  William may have died late 1930’s? Janet died 1953.

I don’t know whether Janet had any brothers or sisters or have any dates for marriage or death of James Herd or if they had any children.
Again no dates or information of family of William and Janet.
I believe William was born at Lesmahagow.

Hi Dalesman

A good place to start checking for possible siblings to Janet in the period you are looking at is both census entries for the family and also on IGI at www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true (which is great for Scottish births and marriages up to around 1874/5 when the Mormons stopped loading on Scottish data.

To check for siblings, on the search screen, simply put in full parents' names on the r/h side (James Chapman and Janet Henderson) and the British Isles/Scotland and you should see 5 entries for children between 1865-72, including Janet's entry in 1868.

Parents' marriage shows on 23 JUN 1865 in Kirkliston, West Lothian.

Images for these births and marriage are available to view on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  The marrige cert for parents will contain details on their parents to let you work back to the next generation.

Possible entry for the Chapman family in 1871:

James Chapman 26, quarryman b. Abercorn, Linlithgow
Janet Chapman 26 b. Dalmeny, Linlithgow
George Chapman 5 b. Kirklinton, Linlithgow
William H Chapman 4 b. Kirklinton, Linlithgow
Janet Chapman 2 b. Abercorn, Linlithgow
Margaret A Chapman 11 months b. Abercorn, Linlithgow
William Smith 31, lodger

Address:    Woodend

How certain are you that Janet's first husband was a James Herd? From SP, I can only see a marriage up to 1899 and the date of the remarriage for Janet, in 1892 in Fife, to a John Herd.

Possible entry for both of them in 1891 prior to this marriage (if it is the correct entry in 1892):

W H H C Mowbray 38, Retired Captain - Army
M I Mowbray 19
John Webb 17
Janet Chapman 22, Cook - Domestic Servant, b. Abercorn
Margaret Cuthbert 26
John Herd 26, coachman b. Beath, Fife

Address: Shore Road, Aberdour Fife

Thank you very much Monica for your information, it was my mistake, it should have been, as you say, John Herd not James. You've filled in a few gaps regarding Janet.
