WOW!
That is interesting, it does explain my grandad's trip down south from scotland then. I suppose my amateur attempt of googling the name got me nowhere. Is there any way to find out who owned the shop? The only two names of people he visisted when he came over here are Ella and Hilary (b circa 1951) That is amazing a big thank you to everyone. If there is anymore info about the shop or it's owners in that period I would be very grateful to find out.
excellent work :)

Excellent find Tazzie!  Was the shop next door to no. 35 by any chance?  I think it could be Cushways Sandwich Bar nowadays on Google Streetview.

edited to add:  yes that seems likely as Tazzie says the butcher next door is number 41.

  Hi ....

Found them in old telephone books of the date
Ayling's had no shop number next door Tunnicliffe's were number 41.

Mersey man was Ayling a family name  quite a few births in Worthing district so would need a A.J  birth.... ie Albert John say.... unless it was run by a lady
as there is an A. J .Ayling who is born in 1937 but wont add her name as may still be living.

I don't have access to the 1911 census but can see from the index that there's a John A Ayling born 1901 in Westbourne Sussex listed in East Preston.

Here's the shop today http://tinyurl.com/2vg59kg

Note the black brick above the door and the whitish area of bricks top left of the door :)

Hi there
Thans again for the responses :)
Good picture of the shop obviously I was looking elsewhere :/
I have just replied with a big message but when I posted, it had gone from the topic
When my grandad came over from the USA he came here to visit his daughter Hilary (b about 1951) Her mother was Ella who would have been connected to the shop, be it some relative of the owners then. My step aunty who lives in Georgia USA now is the girl all in red, and later on in the film my aunty Hilary was in the film. So  I assume it would be Ella Ayling if a direct relative.
Any questions please ask.

The shop now has a number.

They advertise their address, phone, & fax on the internet,
so I guess it's okay to publish here.

CUSHWAY SANDWICH BAR

RUSTINGTON
BN16 3JU LITTLEHAMPTON , WEST SUSSEX

The 2nd airport picture is of a plane belonging to Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). The registration begins LN - which signifies Norway. If the photo was taken in Scotland in the 1960s then it was almost certainly at Prestwick Airport (south of Glasgow)  as no other Scottish airport had transatlantic services in those days. I know that SAS did operate via Prestwick in the 1960s. (In the earlier days of air travel most planes couldn't make it from mainland Europe to the US non-stop and many put down in Scotland to refuel, so the stop would be incorporated into their schedule and you could join or leave there).
