Ceylon: Gervase William Balfour b. 1882

Has anyone any knowledge of the above who according to family legend emigrated to Ceylon to work on a tea plantation.   I presume it would be about 1900 - 1920.

Presumably you know that he was in Canada 1907-1910 and again in 1911 (occupation butcher per passenger manifests) ?

Hello Sharon,   John Alexander and Henrietta were my Gt grandparents but I have very little knowledge about Gervase, I cannot find any marriage for him or his death.   I would be grateful for any further information you may have.

Hello Shaun,   No, I had no idea that he had been in Canada, I have very little knowledge of Gervase who was my Grandfathers brother.   I have not been able to find any marriage for him or his death.   I would really appreciate any further information you can give me to assist.

OK - On 8 September 1911 he departed  in 1st class (one of only two passengers) on the SS Francisco from Hull to Boston en route for Winnipeg. The UK manifest has him as Jervase William Balfour, a butcher and single.

He arrived Boston on 21st. The US manifest has him as Gervase William Balfour, aged 29. and single, a butcher. His contact in Winnipeg is W Richardson of Elmwood. The record notes that he has visited the US before, passing thro from Canada. He is 6' 0 ^1/2 " tall, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes


An earlier (Feb 1910) US border crossing record from Winnipeg says that he had landed in Montreal in May 1907 on the Virginia.

I noticed that he is in the UK 1911 census index as Gervan.
