James Gray c1828
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 16:42 GMT (UK) »
I have a family link to a James Gray born c1828 Shoreditch, Middlesex(according to 1861 Census) father unknown. He wound up in Purton,Wiltshire by 1849 (or even as early as 1841). I think his mother came from Purton (born there in 1808).   Catherine, a servant, probably died in London and James was more than likely taken into his grand parents Samuel and Hannah Gray's family.

With a relative's assistance and acknowledging the lack of a Shoreditch reference, we came across a potential candidate on Ancestry: James Irmaldnforfre Gray bapt,16 Jan 1828 at St John the Evangelist (Waterloo), mother Catharine Gray of Edmonton, Lambeth  James's birth is recorded in the margin as 28th December 1827.  The middle name is probably  ....DelaForce.

Has anyone come across any Delaforce family located in Edmonton? I have investigated one large DelaForce family record online but didn't come across an Edmonton reference.  Any observations would be appreciated.
Many thanks,D

Hi

James (1) (2) Gray is what I read.
(1) = Josselin (spelling)
(2) = Grosse

Next vote?

Agree with Ray, the second name is Grosse, of which there are quite a few in London.

The first unknown name I think might start with a F

If you compare "James" with the 3/4th letters of name2 then it may be
3rd=m 4th=a
and although the final looks like=u, not keen.
final=n

F-ma----
T-ma----
F-ma---u
T-ma---u
F-ma---n
T-ma---n

Inspired guess anyone?

Looking at the word Tailor on the first page, I would say it starts with a 'T'.

Just a thought could it be the other word be for some form of reference to 'Base son of'?

HI

Re "Previous page"

Tis more like the F from Ford than T from Tailor.
Both F and T are basically the same but it's the cross tick for the F

Likewise B from Buckley seems to rule out Base and rule in the G into Grosse/Gosse

The scribbled end of that "F or T" word does not help  !!!!!!!!!!

I still think that the 2 words are the clue to his parentage.

My inspired guess was a word that was reference to base born son, not "base born son".

Thanks for taking the trouble to offer possibilities everyone. Actually Grosse is an alternative to the DelaForce idea according to another relative. I will  take that idea on board and see where I get. Feel free to add more !
