Hi there tony

on one site it says that William Hamilton was a Valet & Groom at HAmpton Court.

I have been on a site called FIBIS but have found nothing as yet still hunting.

Do you know any sites I can try and find William and Caroline on a passenger list at all. I just keep coming up a blank not very good at this  :)

Thanks Ali

The record of William as a groom/valet could insinuate care of horses which would fit in with the Mayapore Magazine reference as horses would be used to pull the large guns. Given his previous experience he would been in a supervisory position ie Superintendant.

As you have the details of Henry's birth on board, I don't think the passenger list would give you any more info than that. I think that I would be inclined to look for Caroline and Henry's return to England in 1841. I don't have access to shipping lists so can't help there I'm afraid.

Did Henry return alone( ie an orphan) in someone's care? Did Caroline return at all? There are deaths recorded of Caroline Johnsons in India but tying it down to one individual is difficult because, as previously stated, it is an unfortunately common name!

Lots of questions to keep you busy!!  :-\

Thanks Tony,

Lots for me to look into, its just so annoying why these records dont state his birth or where he was born and also for Caroline.

Yes this is going to keep me very busy in deed.

Just 1 more thing say William was in the Army is there a site where I can look for these records at all.

All the sources I could think of are in the Other Country - Resources at the top of the Other Country main page.

One thing I have found during my own research is that first names have a tendency to run in families - sons named after fathers/grandfathers etc. (either the mother's or father's side) Whether that helps I don't really know!!

Wish I could be more help but, as you've discovered, resources are limited.

hi hamali,

I have looked several times in the 1841 census for your Henry and can't seem to pinpoint him. Can you tell me which one he is/where he is. I can't seem to see one in a childrens home. Have you found him in the later censuses.

Laterally thinking, he must have ended up where he did in England for a reason,
does it say in the censuses that he is an "orphan"
Have you found him in later censuses.
