Bristol - Palmer - Grocer - Grantham Lodge, St Michales Hill
« on: Saturday 04 December 10 11:19 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out what happened to my ancestor William Palmer. He was born in Somerset in 1844 and moved to Bristol.

In 1901 he was a Master Baker living at 410 Gloucester Road.

The last reference to him I have found is the probate record of his wife Emma who died in 1909.
Her address is given as Grantham Lodge, St Michaels Hill Bristol
William's occupation is given as wholesale grocer.

What and where was Grantham lodge? Was this their new home, the site of William's bsuiness, or even perhaps a nursing home?
I am inclined to think that was where they lived and he had his business as I have found references toother businesses in the area, but not to this one. Does anyone have knowledge of this area at the time?

I am also searching for a record of William's death. I have not found him in the 1911 census. I have looked in vain for any matching death registrations or proabate records.

Grateful for any  help

Liz,

I've not looked, but you might find something in the trade directories at

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately there is no directory for Gloucestershire/Bristol for 1900s on this site. I have checked earlier and later dates. Are there any 1900s directories online or does anyone have access to one. I will put it on my list of things to look out for

Liz,

Following your last, I found Palmer William & Co wholesale grocers at 55 Redcliff Street on page 302 of Kelly's 1902 directory for Bristol.

The very next entry is for another Palmer William & Son bakers at 410 Gloucester Road.

From the above, it appears that there were two William Palmers.

Hi Lizb
I think that there were 2 William Palmers with wives named Emma. One was a master baker & the other a provisions merchant. In 1901 one couple is living at 410 Gloucester Rd & the other at 78 St Michael's Hill & I think the probate in 1909 is for Emma wife of the latter at St Michael's Hill. He appears as a widower in 1911 at the same address.
Best I can do without any credits for the site.

WILLIAM  PALMER,   HEAD,  WIDOWER
Occupation   GROCER
Birth Place   CLAYHANGER
County   Gloucestershire
District   Bristol
Residence   78 ST MICHAELS HILL

Thank you both - especially for pointing out the fact that there were two William and Emma Palmers.
Mine is definitely the baker at 410 Gloucester Road.
It is a coincidence that both the Emma Palmers were the same age.

So that means I am still looking to see what happened to both William and Emma.
He was born in 1844 in Raddington, Somerset and she was born in 1839 in Wootton Courtenay Somerset.
I have last trace of them in 1901.

The plot thickens a bit becasue I am also looking for their son William Henry Palmer born 1879 Templeton Devon.
I have last record of him in 1911 at 1 Littleton Street, Easton Bristol. He was also a baker.
In 1911 William Henry's wife Eleanor was in hosptial and their 5 children were being looked after by relatives.
I have traced all the children subsequently - also Eleanor who was my great grandmother - but I do not know what happened to William Henry - or his father.

I would love to find out to tell my mother who was never told anything about her grandfather. Her grandmother Eleanor never mentioned him.

I am assuming William (the elder) died between 1901 and 1911, and William Henry (the younger) died between 1911 and 1920.
