Edward (William, Thomas) Kelley Ancestry Scotland to PA
« on: Saturday 04 December 10 18:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

According to family tradition our Kelley ancestors may have emigrated from Scotland to Philadelphia PA USA. Edward Kelley was born between 1735-1750 possibly in Scotland or PA. His father may have been Thomas or William Kelley. During the 1790 US Census these three (3) Kelleys were living near each other in Franklin County PA. Edward Kelley married Elizabeth Lauthers about 1767. They had seven (7) children. The youngest of whom was Azariah Kelley, who is my direct line. Elizabeth's father may have been Thomas Lauthers. The Edward and Elizabeth Kelley family was living in Mifflin Co PA during the 1800 census. They were residing in Armstrong Co PA in the 1810 census. Edward Kelley died there in 1814. Does anyone have this lineage figured out and tied into Scotland? Thank you very much for any assistance that anyone might be able to provide.

Kind regards,
Ken Kelly (*)

It's best to have only 1 post for the same request- otherwise too many people waste time searching for information that's already been posted on another thread, etc. so I'll leave this one for replies and lock the others.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Your posts say Edward Kelley was born "possibly in Scotland or PA [Pennsylvania]" or "possibly in England or PA" or "Ireland or PA" so it seems you haven't a clear idea where he was born. Since the dates are well before the start of civil registration in Scotland, England or Ireland you would first need to establish at least a country of birth.
Have you checked all possible U.S. census records for Edward? and for his children (father's birthplace listed for many of the years)? a record of Edward's death? any records (such as death or marriage) for his children which might list state or country of father's birth?
If and when you find the country then you'll will probably have to narrow down the birthplace quite a bit more to start searching for any existing church records.
