Ellen Evans (nee Lysaght) wife of John Evans died in Ballarat in 1906 (1906 /4095). On this record her parents are given as Michael Lysaght, contractor and Mary Lysaght (nee Fitzgerald - not Maloney). So some discrepancy between the marriage and death records but the death certificate gives her parents names as Michael and Mary. The informant was her son, Thomas Terence Evans. He may have been uncertain of his grandmother's family name.

However, this doesn't explain the names on the marriage record!

Putting aside for a moment the marriage cert dicrepancies, here is a theory ::)

I think there was only one couple Michael and Mary LYSAGHT  in Victoria at that time so all references to them are to one in the same.

When Michael and Mary LYSAGHT arrived in 1841 per Middlesex they left behind 2 children- 3 year old Ellen and her brother 4 year old John. Possibly with family members whose plan was to join them at an early point.

This early coming together did not happen until the 2 youngsters got their own assisted passage, perhaps with parental help.

The lass in NSW per LadyKennaway was likely a relative.

If Ellen  (KINNOCK) was truly the mother of Michael LYSAGHT, then she was also the mother of other likely brothers and sisters, some of whom it appears,  arrived with Michael and Mary in 1841 per Middlesex.  This would make Ellen a forename of choice  in the family.

In the advertisement, this Ellen’s surname is not mentioned, but presumed to be LYSAGHT as she uses the term daughter to describe herself.

However, could we consider, goddaughter or niece as the truer relationship.?

She has dictated her advertisement to a scribe and confusion would be very easy with a word or two.

Thoughts anyway.
Sue

Hi Sue
I agree with your reasoning:
1. Only one Michael and Mary Lysaght and they arrived on the Middlesex in 1841
2. They left 4-year old John and 3-year old Ellen in Ireland most probably with extended family members. We could ask why?
3. Ellen Lysaght who arrived on the Lady Kennaway is a relative possibly a god-daughter.
4. Ellen is a favoured forename for the family
5. Highly likely for confusion between Ellen in Sydney and the scribe who prepared the copy for the advertisement.

Speculation on our part, but a reasonable scenario.
Thanks for your input.
