Burghfield Lookup Turner or Webb COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have found several IGIs on familysearch which relate to Turner or Webb, for example, a christening of John Webbe or Turner on 24 Dec 1671, son of John Webbe or Turner and Mary. I believe he might be the father of my William Turner, bp in Burghfield on 15 mar 1709 to Johnathon & Mary Turner.

Does anyone with access to the Burghfield parish registers see these entries and is there any more information that might explain the combined names? Or does anyone have any thoughts on why the two names would appear in a parish register?

thanks for the help!  :)

Double names in PR indexes often indicate an illegitimate birth - where the father is named (directly or indirectly)

Eg

John s/o Mary Smith and Thomas Brown

or

John Brown s/o Mary Smith

In either case it is not clear what the child's surname will be so both are indexed.

Thanks for that information. Unfortunately it's not clear from the IGI entries who was a Webb and who was a Turner...hoping to come at this from another direction at some point. Thanks for your help  :)

Hello Claire,

Happy New Year to you and  all,

I can't help with any bapts. but these entries are taken from the Berks Burial Index (ex BFHS);
Burghfield St.Mary.

15-4-1716 TURNER, John (Web)
16-6-1675      "        Marie (WEBB), wife of John
No other info is supplied.     The inference is that TURNER is the surname.

Hope these help you along the way.

I doubt that John bapt 1671 is the Jonathan parenting the next generation - who is more likely to be Jonathan bapt 1677:

St Mary the Virgin, Burghfield
28 Aug 1677 Jonathan son of John and Anne Turner als Webbe

he married Mary Farnel 8 Apr 1703, same church.

No sign of the explanation of the aliases - presumably a hangover from an earlier generation.

I think you could be right Newbury Chap,

I have in my notes that John's first wife Marie had died the previous year on 16 June 1675 and that he married Anne Dennis on 25 September 1676. But I didn't have the baptism of their son Jonathon.

Thank you for that!!!!
