I know the first official census was 1841 but apart from the Doomsday Book,have there been any others in Britain,I mean after all they managed one in Bethlehem 2000 years ago ;D

There were but early ones were just head counts.

1841 is the first genealogically useful one.

They were not all just head counts. For census reports from 1801 see http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/census/index.jsp. For details of the coverage and what details are shown in the 1801-1831 censuses see http://www.histpop.org.uk/pre41/listings_a.pdf also  "Pre-1841 Censuses & Population Listings" by Colin R. Chapman. However the 1841 Census is the first one that is of any practical use for family history research.

Hmmm very interesting,thank you both for that.Stan the link to the Vision of Britain site was most useful.I now know my GGGG grandfather was one of 31 Tanners in Linlithgow ;).I know those of us with interests in Scotland will be eagerly awaiting the first working day of 2011 for the 1911 census release.

There was also The Posse Comitatus of 1798.

The Posse Comitatus was a list of men between the ages of 16 and 60, who were not already in the army, but who could be conscripted to serve. It includes a list of those with horses and carts. The list was compiled because there was a belief that the French might attempt to invade England.

there was a religious census undertaken everynow and then whereby the people had to swear their allegiance / oath to the queen / king

The 1911 census was held on the 2 April 1911.

I understood that it would not be available to the public until after 100 years, ie April 2011.
