PHILLIPS  Harriet
TAYLOR  David

ps i have literally just found a marriage in Q4 1878 Ticehurst for a George Phillips & Harriett Attaway
David Taylors wife was Ellen Attaway so maybe Harriett & Ellen are sisters and thats how she knew David and they married AFTER the dead wifes siter act came in.

Harriett says she was born Chiddingstone like Ellen but the marriage to George in 1878 is after daughter Clara was born

slightly confused

Hi toni*

1851  -  HO107/1641/11/14

George Attoway 41
Emily Attoway 26 b Chiddingstone
Jane Attoway 10   William Attoway 11 b Cowden
Ellen Attoway 7 Emma Attoway 6  James Attoway 1  b Chiddingstone

1861 - RG9/578/13/19

Ellen Attaway is a servant living away from her family

1861  -  RG9/490/84/13

George Attaway 49 Emily Attaway 39 Jane Attaway 18 James Attaway 11 all b Chiddingstone
Harriett Attaway 9 b Cowden

So it looks as though Ellen & Harriett could have been sisters.  You would probably need birth certificates to be absolutley sure

Hi Toni,

I have just taken a look at your ATTAWAY-TAYLOR-PHILLIPS problem.  Linda is correct.  You will need birth certificates for both Ellen and Harriet to determine the exact relationship between them as they could have been sisters, aunt and niece or cousins of each other.

Personally, I would not find it surprising at all to see a marriage of a couple up to 10 years after the birth of their first child.  There are many reasons why couples did not marry immediately but instead lived together as man and wife in what we would know, today, as a common law arrangement - too many to go into here.  But proving that the first birth is a product of the couple of that delayed marriage must be done with a birth certificate for that first child.

Accordingly, you will have to order the birth certificate for Clara PHILLIPS to determine that her mother had indeed been Harriet ATTAWAY and that her father had been George PHILLIPS.  Clara may have been born to another set of parents or to George PHILLIPS with a first wife.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Susan
