Ellen Fairclough of Adlington
« on: Thursday 09 December 10 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My Grandfather Joshua Blackburn married an Ellen Fairclough in Adlington,  Lancashire Sept 1932.  From baptismal records & wedding certificate, her parents are listed as Paul Fairclough (Boatman-presumably leeds liverpool canal) and Ellen.

I also think she had at least 2 sisters (one called Anna).

Any information on the lineage of both parents would be welcome as i'm lost !

Regards

David Appleyard

Hi

Can you give some additional info please

How old was Ellen when she married in 1932  - same info needed for Joshua

When and where was Ellen baptised

The only Paul Fairclough marriage on freebmd was in 1895 Chorley but LancsBMD shows bride was Ida Nuttall  www.freebmd.org.uk

If Ellen was born before 1911 - you would need to look for her on the 1911 census which has a free index but is then strictly pay per view

If she was born after 1911 - you would need to check freebmd for a birth

The 1901 PRO index shows occupations but there is no Paul Fairclough occ boatman
www.1901censusonline.com

Who was Joshua's father on the marriage cert

Do you know where Joshua was born as there are a couple of possible freebmd entries

Did Joshua die in Bolton in 1986?  If so - he was born 28.6.1906 so again - you would need to check the 1911 census for him

Hi, I realised I was looking at the wrong certificate!

Ellen Fairclough married John Blackburn in November 1882. At this time she is listed as a spinster aged 25, 3 years older than John.  Her birth would therefore be approx 1857.

Her father is Paul Fairclough, Boatman, also married to an Ellen.  I have no details for either, but baptismal records suggest Ellen Fairclough had a sister Anna.

Witnesses at the wedding of John and Ellen are a George Finch and Hannah Fairclough

Thanks in advance

Regards

David

There's a likely Hannah at 23 Etherstone St, Pennington in 1881 (RG11/3807 ED9, Fol51 Pg38).

Harriet Fairclough, Head, Unm, 25, Cotton weaver, Lancashire Adlington
Hannah do, sister, Unm, 20, do, do do

No Paul yet.

This looks like the family in 1861 (RG9/3118 ED6 Fol79 Pg16):
Mac Kinzie Houses, Bear Bridge, Adlington (must be near the White Bear)

Lot Crook, Head, Mar, 28, Boat man barge, Lancashire Houghton
Hannah Crook, Wife, Mar, 30, Boat mans wife, Lancashire Haigh
John Fairclough, step son, 12, Boat man, Lancashire Haigh
Harriet Fairclough, step daur, 8, Scholar,  Lancashire Haigh
Thomas Fairclough, step son, 6, Scholar,  Lancashire Adlington
Ellen Fairclough, step daur, 5, Scholar,  Lancashire Adlington
Hannah Fairclough, step daur, 2, Scholar,  Lancashire Adlington

It appears that Hannah remarried quite soon after the death of Paul Fairclough.

LancashireBMD has a marriage of Lot Crook and Anna Fairclough at Christ Church Adlington (it says St Paul's, but that opened later) in 1861.

Lan-OPC has a burial of Paul Fairclough age 30 on 10 May 1858 at Christ Church.

Woops! Just been going through the baptisms, and there are TWO Paul Faircloughs, both boatmen, having children at the time.

The family I've found above (Paul and Hannah) used Rivington church, not Adlington.

There are also two stonemasons called Paul, one married to Esther and one to Mary/Maria. One of these was the father of Leonard, whose company became big in bridge building.
