Date only please.
« on: Friday 10 December 10 14:16 GMT (UK) »
This picture is someone who is clearly identified on the back of the picture.  two copies of the picture have different inscriptions.  A date will hopefully pin down which bit of the family tree this person should be connected to.  TIA.

Out of interst, where is this John Poole from? I have some Pooles in the tree.

I think the date of this is quite difficult. The only key feature is the collar, which was in vouge from about 1795-1830.

This particularly reminds me of this portrait of Andrew Jackson:

Which was probably made about 1830.

I don't know if anyone could place the hair.

John Poole is "grandmother's Uncle from Dumfries".
This is just a bit odd, because all Grandmother Pools's family were from Hampshire.
This did include a John Pool (they kept altering the spelling) and he could have gone to Scotland.  There are a lot of Pool(e)s in the Annan area of Dumfries - mostly sheep-farmers.
My lot were mostly tailors.

Well the hair is exactly the style that Georgette Heyer's heros wore - so does that help date it??  Her stories were set about 1810 - 1815 ish.    ;) ;)   ;D ;D    it isn't a very scientific guess - but it might help!   or more definitely have a look at this image of Gov Lachlan Macquarie done about 1818-1819.

He's very handsome your rellie!!

If the picture was made in the 1830s, then it is almost certainly John Poole - born in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, in 1788. This would fit the inscription on the back "Grandmother's Uncle from Dumfries", and on the back of the second: "Great Uncle John Poole".  This assumes that the subject in the picture is aged in the mid 40s.  If I am right, and the picture is a Calotype, then the Scottish connection gets stronger (it was a popular technique in Scotland) so there is another assumption that he moved up from Hampshire to Dumfries.
Tracing him up there will be a whole lot of fun.
Thanks everyone
Geoff
