BERTHA WHITTENBURY (born c.1810)
« on: Monday 13 December 10 19:33 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the baptism and/or birth of BERTHA WHITTENBURY, daughter of JEREMIAH WHITTENBURY and ELIZABETH (nee Wright.)

Jeremiah and Elizabeth were married in Bakewell parish church, on the 1st of February, 1802. I believe that Bertha was born in 1810 (according to the IGI), and was Jeremiah's third daughter (he had had a previous marriage and was a widower.)

BERTHA married HARTLEY PACKER GISBORNE in the church of St John Deansgate, Manchester in 1832. (The Gisborne family built Yoxall Lodge in Staffordshire.)

Their eldest son, JOHN SACHEVERELL GISBORNE was my great-great-grandfather. (Jeremiah Whittenbury was, I believe, born of non-conformist stock in London. He became a cotton merchant and lived in Manchester.)

Many thanks!

One of Bertha's sisters  ???:-

Baptisms: 27 Dec 1807 St Peter, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Georgina Whittenbury - Daughter of Jeremiah Whittenbury & Elizabeth
    Born: 8 Nov 1807

There are parish registers online for Manchester St Peter but I've just checked and the earliest baptisms are 1860 :(:-

Still no sign of Bertha but..... in the Manchester Guardian on 12 Jun 1847 there is an advertisement for the auction of "The entire personal and  household effects of the late Jerimiah Whittenbury" ..... and then it goes on to list his personal and household effects.  I am not sure I can post it here because of copyright but if you send me a PM with your email address I can email a copy back to you.

Hi there.

Details of Bertha's Whittenbury's forebears recorded on the Wright family pedigree that I have in my possession.  Please see attached image.

The Wright family tree can be seen in Longstone Records as written by my great grandfather, George Thomas Wright in 1906 as per the link from page 325 onwards.

Dear Hugh,
Many thanks for this! Much appreciated.
I have managed to obtain a rather fine copy of the book you mention, and look forward to
going through it.
All good wishes,
