A helpful bunch here, thanks for the suggestions. I've looked at that bible again and it's an 8 but your folks evidence would indicate that's a typo - except that the online cemetery entry in Dunedin says died 1930 aged 42 making it about 1888 - so the DBM entry might be a typo perhaps? It's time to part with some money to get a printout, back to the original topic of Percy. Thanks, Alastair

There was also Ethel Leonie Sheppard born in 1878 - I have not managed to locate her birth being registered and Ernest Sheppard born in 1882. A busy family.

Was the bounder a bigamist? I can find Percy Sheppard, son of James, Brighton Sussex marrying Louisa Paris in 1872, aged 19. Louisa Sheppard, upholsteress, is in the 1881 census as Head of House along with Percy Sheppard aged 8. I have not as yet found a death notice for Percy Sheppard in Sussex.  Could he have skipped the country, maybe arrived on Ocean Mail in 1874 worked as an upholsterer, married Emily Kate Lucas in 1876, had 7 children and moved on?  One family story has him moving to the goldfields in Blue Mountains, NSW and thereafter managing a warehouse in Sydney dealing in chinaware.
