What a fascinating thread - no pun intended  ::)  I had no idea that this went on.

I believe that the Penelope brand might still be available?

Hello Diana

Thank you so much for the scans of the Penelope kit. Isn't the letter wonderful, so telling, I do have a copy of it but thank you. I have found some ex servicewomen (many) and men who recall the kits and used them. However no one recalls who distributed them and if anyone came into the hospital to assist them with their needlework. Perhaps it was the W.V.S ?

Many thanks, Karen

However we must assume that it was a biblical scholar who wrote the wording on the top left.

Hi,
Found this site by accident, looking for WM Briggs embroidery.  I have a complete unstarted embroidery kit by WM Briggs & Co, looks really old - it is a collage size 12" x 26" called "SEPTEMBER".  I'm trying to get some info on it (to be honest, with a view to selling it).  Would you know anything about it - or even be interested in acquiring it?

It may be a bit late but I worked at William Briggs from 1959 until 1962.  It was then as someone has said on Cannon Street Manchester where now the Arndale Centre is.  In 1962 it was taken over and moved to Bolton that is why people say it is in two different places.  Brings back memories seeing the Penelope trade name.

I have come across an unused box of 24 skeins of Briggs Hedebo FILOSELLE shade 621 (Flesh Pink) with a vintage embroidery transfer from Viella, intended for a baby's gown.
Can anyone tell me please whether this may be of any interest now?

It will be of interest to anyone who collects vintage sewing/knitting patterns and materials. When I originally posted this question I was researching wartime military occupational kits.
