**completed** Information from rootsireland - now where?
« on: Sunday 18 May 08 11:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction I am looking for a online site where I can check a birth record. I have her down as Isabella Harold born abt 1826 Armagh.

I did find on the Armagh Ancestry Online site a Isabella Herald born 1825 in Armagh.

Is there another website that I can hit to get this information, as I am a bit too far away to go into any offices.  On the Armagh Ancestry Site, just to look at the record it was 5 Euro, and I think prefered a minimum credit of 40 Euro's (which worked out about A$65).  On one site here you only pay A$1 to view the entry or some are free, so I thought A$8, just to view the entry was a little steep.  If it's the only site that I can get the info, then I will have to bite the bullet, but I thought the "guru's" on this site might have some alternatives for me.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Unfortunately, Irish research does tend to be more expensive than most, and the site you have found, whilst I would agree it can be costly to use, it is probably cheaper than the few other alternatives.

In your case, an 1826 entry is pre official registration, so will most likely be details from a church register. To research such yourself, you would need to know which church and then attempt to gain info from places such as PRONI or directly from church in question.

You can just pay the 5 euros to look at one entry.  That is the minimum requirement, not 40 euros.  I only pay 5 euros at a time. It's the only online Armagh site that I know of, and if you choose the right entry, good value. Good luck RosemaryJoan

Emerald Ancestry also has a lot of Armagh birth and marriage info not always quite as detailed as the other sitres, but a month or 6 month subscription makes it a lot cheaper to go hunting - it is on a subscription basis and I often use it to narrow down which ones I will go the sxtra expense to pay per view @ Euro5 per go.  I do find some diffrences at time between the number of entries on the 2 websites
That said, they seldom have pre 1864 recirds and I couldn't find your Isabella on there

Hi, OK your help please! You mention about finding out the church, how do I do this.  If I get the birth information from Armagh Ancestry Online will it have the church listed? And that's if it's the right person!

Thanks

The information in original baptismal entries can vary according to the religion, church, the period and the clergyman. At the very least you'll probably get the child's name, date of baptism and perhaps the father. If you are very lucky the mother's Christian name and the townland might be listed and even rare might be the mother's maiden name.
Going by the samples listed on Armagh Ancestry it isn't clear that you will get the exact name of church:

Hi,

A while ago I did ask about information on Armagh. So I finally bit the bullet, as I had danced around and couldn't get the information.

So I have found a Isabella Herald born 1-Oct-1825 - Armagh, Co Armagh, Roman Catholic, Father: Thomas Herald - mother: Margaret Durkin - Sponsor 1: John Durkin - Sponsor 2 Anne Duffy

OK so I was originally after information about Isabella Harrold born 1826, who we have her parents were down as Thomas and Margaret Derigan, so it's pretty close.  I tried to search for her sister Margaret born 1827, and brother William born 1830, but haven't found anything.

So any idea's at how to find more on the family??

Thanks

Nedda

OK to add also to what I have just posted:

Thomas Harold - Margaret Durcan - married 3 Jan 1818 - Armagh, Co Armagh

Roman Catholic - both not married.

Wife's father - blank Durcan - Husband's father - blank Harold

Witness 1 - John Durcan (funny that name pops up again)
Witness 2 - Jas Hoey ?

So I am thinking that this may be our family, but why wouldn't I be able to find information on the other 2 kids?? Have found information on the brother William's death which has his Birth listed as ARAM - presuming this is Armagh.

Many thanks for any information/help.
