The middle initial for Harold - "L"  appears to be Lancelot.

Hi Sandra:

There have been quite a few budget cuts in California during the past couple of years.  I don't know if the library would be able to do this (since there are some cuts in service), but maybe the Ask A Librarian service might be able to locate an obituary for you?

Did they have children; would you be able to try and find any information about the couple, by researching the childrens' information?  Or, perhaps that is one reason you would like to see the obituaries.

In the meantime, I'll continue to have a look around.  I haven't found anything yet.

Hello Lisa,

Looked at the library option but Los Angeles Public Library do not do Obituary look ups unfortunately. (under research guides)  The dates covered on the Los Angeles Times through the Ancestry Library Edition  and RAOGK cover 1881 - 1986 so just missed out there. 
From the Army Enlistment of 1942 it stated he was single, so married later, believe to have 2 sons (both still alive).
Also contacted a family tree entry but last log in over 6 months ago and no response so far.  Not to worry - shame really,  its one of those that would make a good period drama !!

The Los Angeles Times obits from that time frame are available on obitsarchive.com, but neither of them are coming up.

Lisa, again, many, many thanks for your input - will send you a pm - the person you mention is the son of Harold Gates which is the connection I was looking for.

To all those who have sent messages and e-mails over the last week or so, I am extremely over-whelmed and elated by all the good wishes.  Still alive and kicking and will respond to each and every one in due course but for now a million thanks to everyone.
