Researching farmers/farm records in Scotland
« on: Monday 20 December 10 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Dear all,

Does anyone have any advice for researching farmers in Scotland?

I am trying to follow the following snippet:

Glasgow University Matriculation Records:
1804 A.D. Matriculated 6624 JOANES ADAMSON Filius natu Maximus Joannis Agricolae in parochia de Kirkmahoe in comitatu de Dumfries.
[1804 A.D. Matriculated 6624 John Adamson eldest son of John Adamson, farmer in the parish of Kirkmahoe, Dumfries.]

John Adamson (1778-1843) later became the schoolmaster of Twynholm parish, Kirkcudbrightshire.

Would rent rolls or something similar be useful? I'm really not sure where to start with this one...

Best wishes,
Sam

Hi sancti,

I actually looked this one up and the father is listed as a clockmaker, so that doesn't really seem to fit...

Also consulted the Horse Tax records at ScotlandsPlaces but no sign of John Adamson...

I wonder if either of them could be John Adamson Snr's sons...?

If John jnr was away then his brothers would take on the farm. They could both be sons of John

Have you checked for a will for John snr?

Had a look on Scotland's People, but nothing that seems to fit turned up...

Searched for John Adamson in Dumfries and Kirkcudbright, and also for all John Adamsons who were farmers.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your help
