Sorry forgot to say my interest stems from William (b 1797)  & Mary Ann Hutson from East Peckham (their son was Charles of the Margret) Williams parents were William & Fanny.  The children of William & Fanny I only have the aforementioned William (1797) & his sister Ann (1796) there could well be others such as your John who married Sarah as Nettlested's just up the road from East Peckham - will keep looking

Thanks so much, yes the baby was John Saxby which makes me think that the father's name might have been Saxby.  I think John was born around 1796 and Sarah the same, found a wedding in 1817 in Maidstone which I think is them as the birth's of the babies were registed under Maidstone too, apart from William who I can't find.  Will keep looking - it is nice to have found someone else though because they must link somewhere i suppose.

Hello, I live in King's Cottages in Nettlestead, and I have just dug up from my garden some fragments of an earthenware beer flagon with the inscription -*CRUTTE* KENT ARMS * WATERINGBURY* Thete are bits missing and the begining and end are missing from the first word and 'wateringbury'  I have found a reference to the pub and believe it was run by Charles Hutson. Is this of any interest to you? Can you tell me where the pub was?

All the best

Chris

Hi Chris

Welcome to Rootschat

There is a little bit about the "Kent Arms" here http://wateringbury.blogspot.com/2009/01/pubs.html

I wonder if the inn keeper was CRUTTENDEN?

'CRUTTE' is part of the name of the contents, it may be some sort of cider, I have a machine for crushing apples called a 'Scrutter' ... Just a theory. I have a document which implies that Charles Hutson was the landlord of the kent arms. Thanks for the link, the railway pub is about 300 yards from my house where I found the fragments.

Does anybody have any evidence that would place Charles Hutson as the landlord pre-1878?

Oh I see - I thought CRUTTENDEN would have been a bit off centre but just thinking it was a name found in the area ;D

Would you mind having a look in directories for the 'Kent Arms'
which is the pub named on the pottery and I believe Charles Hutson ran?

Thanks
