Donohoe - Graigue Rural
« on: Tuesday 21 December 10 20:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I've finally found my family (sort of) on the 1911 census, they are listed in Graigue Rural here http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/1911_1G.htm

DONOHOE - John and Margaret, Patrick, Mary, Anne, Bridget, Margaret, Catherine, Patrick.

But unfortunately Graigue Rural is the only one that doesn't appear in the search on The National Archives of Ireland website.

Would anyone know where i can find the original census images for Graigue Rural?

Many thanks :)

Exploring Family Origins has Graigue Rural, both 1901 & 1911, is there something else you require, besides the Donoghue names?

Hi Mark,
I think I can solve your mystery.  I was born in this part of Graigue, and it actually is within Laois, then known as Queens county.
Go back to search 1911 census in National archives. Go to Queens County, Graigue Rural, then pick sub heading Graigue and your Donohoes are in house no 8.   I believe we may be related, I have Donohoes ( Donahues, Donaghues - be open to spelling variations) within that small geographical area.  My paternal great grandmother was Mary Donaghue, and my paternal grandaunt also married a Donohue and they lived in this street.    I think this is the same family.  They tended to keep family traditional names.  This couple have Mary, Ann and Bridget as their eldest three girls, as did my grandmother Brigid, who I believe is your Margarets (aged 29 in 1911) sister.
I will check my details later, but if I am correct, your Margaret Donohoes maiden name was Collins. Have you a way of verifying this?
regards
Irishrose

Many thanks Jack, i have that book somewhere i'll check it out.

Irishrose, I found them!!! thank you :D

Although i think this Margaret has the maiden name of Comerford, my Great Grandparents were John Donohoe & Margaret Comerford and the children match up with the names my aunt gave me, and there are Comerfords living next door to them. There is another family of Donohoe's in the same road as well.

If i have the right family i am one happy bunny :)

Hi Mark,

Thats great, glad to have been of help.  Donohoe, Comerford, and Collins would all have been close together in that area.  Many families intermarried over the generations, and would have been related through several family members.  The Comerfords still live in this area, and some decendants of other families.
Although it was Graigue Rural then, it has now been built up and is a very busy residential and shopping area.  Many of your ancestors are probably buried in the nearby Old Sleaty cemetery although not all graves would have a headstone.  It is a number of years out of use and overgrown, but well worth a visit to see the medieval church, and the ancient crosses which date from the 5th century monastery which was there.
Delighted you were able to find your rellies here.  If there are any other names in this area I might be able to help you with, please feel free to ask
Happy Christmas :-*

Thankyou very much for your help, I myself am a Donohoe, and my Dad says he might take me and my brother over there to show me where he grew up.

Hi Mark,

Dont know what age group your dad is, but if he grew up in Graigue, he would probably know my older cousins who all grew up around here. There are now in their 70s, and one of them in particular is a great fountain of local knowledge abour Sleaty and Graigue.  My dads family were all involved with the local GAA football club back then (wasn't everybody?) so if you dad played, he would definitely be remembered here.
