Deadend - help! John & Elizabeth Dent 1852 Gateshead
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 14:35 GMT (UK) »
I have reached a deadend in tracing my family and have been unable to get any details about the above named other than those taken from their son, Joseph John Dent's birth certificate 18 Oct 1852.

John Dent was listed as being a land agent on the birth certificate and Elizabeth was listed as the mother and had previously been known as Strong and formerly Bell. Her address in Nov 1852 was Brunswick Terrace, Gateshead. I have a feeling they may have both died while Joseph John was young as the only record I can find of him prior to 1871 census when he was in Carlisle was on the 1861 census where he appears to be living with Ann Bell. Although in this case he is listed as a lodger aged 8, I am assuming Ann is his grandmother in view of the mother's maiden name. I have been unable to get any further info or go back to find names/places of earlier generations or any more about John being a land agent and what that would have involved. I do believe that Gateshead had a cholerea epidemic in 1853 and that it wasn't the nicest of places to live at the time!

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

PS My grandma did once say that her gt-gt (?) grandma had come from Odessa but I'm not sure that this is through this line or a Scottish line I have.

Joseph J Dent 8 lodger scholar b Gateshead Durham

Mmm  :-\

1851 HO107; Piece: 2387; Folio: 467; Page: 4
High House Streatlam and Stainton Durham
Ralph Dent is with wife, Hannah, several children, governess and servants and

Elizabeth Bell, 66 yrs mother in law b Romaldkirk, Yorkshire

I found Elizabeth Bell and daughter in 1841 in Romald Kirk and there are lots of Dents even on the census page  :-\

Ann Bell, with whom Joseph was staying was from Cumberland though.
It may be best to leave these people - getting confusing.  ::)

Hi,
Did find two Bell families living in Brunswick Terrace , Gateshead in 1851, unfortunately no house numbers.
Thomas, Mary and family HO107/2402  37/9
Also
HO107/2402 33/1
Edward Bell head mar 42 Whitesmith  ?, Northumberland
Ann        "    wife   mar 42                        Newcastle on Tyne, All saints
Isabella  "    dau            7                        Gateshead.

I don t think either families are connected with Elizabeth, can t find any evidence for that anywhere.

Hi,

I've been looking at this bit of my tree again and think that the John who is the land agent visiting Dowager in 1851 would be Joseph John's father but struggling to find any more info.

Looking at Elizabeth Dent, previously Strong, nee Bell - I have a feeling she was born in approx 1830 in Tynemouth to an Ann & George Bell.

Would you say this sounds logical and any suggestions as to how I can take this line further with possible marriage and death dates ?

Thanks
