If you imagine it without the helmet, then you'll see that the sword blades are very curved and scimitar-like.  They curve around and almost make a circle that disappears under the rectangular mother-of-pearl (or whatever it is) links.

Hmmm...A stylised curl to make the join...I would opine nothing to do with scimitars

Even Naval swords have a curve ;)

An Arty piece rather than a Military piece...Most people have no idea of what is and what isnt military, and these being knocked out at 10 a penny would go for something stylised and appealing for the women, but with a  slightly martial overtone. This type of stylised stuff can be seen as far back as early Celtic/British art into the Saxon era...Curly animals, zoomorphics and stylised weaponry.
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Yes, and quite likely traded in bazaars in Yorvik too, Scrimnet!

Hi,

Thanks for all you helpful ideas. I have little doubt that it came from a bazaar as my Grandfather certainly had no money. When I next go home I will have a "hunt" for any possible hallmarks. Either way thank you for your insight it has been fun to wonder where on earth it came from.

Many thanks

Brigcs

Has it been cleaned recently?  Seems surprising it's not tarnished if it is only made of non-precious metals...   :-\

Hi,

No it hasn't been cleaned for at least the last 7 years and I would imagine for many years. When I next visit my Dad I will collect it and have a reall good look at it.

Please post the outcome here, together with any markings you see on the reverse. Thanks.

Will do Redroger.

I have given this some thought. It has to be something cheap or otherwise my Grandfather would have pawned in. Even my Aunt's shoes "disappeared".

Thanks to everyone. I'll be back after half-term.
