Many thanks for all this very helpful info Pam. There is much to digest. I think Joel snr wife Elizabeth Tutton came from a long line of Tuttons in Somerset going back to the 1500s

Can you explain your second post, I am not sure whether the details you give are 1861 or 1871. Are you saying that the family was split in 1861/1971.

I cannot find Elizabeth (nee Tutton) d record, though husband Joel snr d 1876

Barabara K Helliker (dau of William Edward, g dau of Joel jnr) m Clifford John Newick in 1941. I notice a Barbara K Newick m a Mr Biggs Glos/Somerset. Did Barbara m twice (don't know the date) do you know? C J Newick didn't d until 1994!

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Joel Helliker was married and alone 1861 census, I looked at the 1871 census to see who he was married to.

It was Louisa who with dau Louisa Jane and son John was visiting at Meare Somerset The Cook family who had a boarder James Laver. 1861 census as I listed before.

Could have been a divorce if correct people.


Did you say that a William Edward Helliker was Joel Juniors son? They have a Edward Charles and a Frederick William. but no William Edward son.  William Edward was the son of Edward Charles and grandson of Joel Junior which would make Barbara his ggrandaughter.
