English workers or migrants to Chille/Peru 1910+
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 20:32 GMT (UK) »
???Hi all and Happy New Year to you all. I am looking for information on my Great-Grandfather Benjamin Charles Ward, up until 1901 census we have him, by the 1911 he has disappeared , but the odd thing is he boarded the Orissa bound for Punta Arenas Chile in 1912 on the 12 August from Liverpool that year! He then returned on 8 July 1913 on the same ship departing from Callao Peru. Then departs again on the 18 September 1913 from Liverpool to Punta Arenas on the Oronsa of The Pacific Steam Navigation Co stating he was bound for Callao (Lima) Peru, my first thought was may be he joined the merchant navy, but that hasn't come to anything. By trade he was a Tin-smith.
On the ships embarkation list it has 9 tinsmiths as passengers. Can anybody help me as to was there gold prospecting over there or what kind of work they would have done !! after 1913 there is no sign of him, no register of death or divorce, did he make his fortune and decide to stay or die trying, any information would be of great help, thank you.

Thanks again for your help Matthew Ward

Mining and railroad construction are the most likely industries to have drawn him to Chile and Perú.  There are a few  records from these countries at FamilySearch:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis
