passenger list to Canada from England
« on: Friday 31 December 10 00:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi
my late grandfather Leonard Hill  traveled to Canada sometime between 1901 and 1917 when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and came back to England, I would like to know why he went to Canada
He was born in Chesham Buckinghamshire on 1st January 1892
regards Jenny

hello jenny
i,ve looked in the emigration records on f m p  and there are 8 len hills listed for your time frame 4 are children and one a tourist from scotland an adult and3 more likely candidates born 1891-93 one was an architects asst another a farmer and the third a carter these records don,t have much more info regarding the people themselves but not even if they are travelling with someone else they just refer to others with the same surname , if you know any more re him post it up and i may be able to pin point him better if he,s there .

Hi Jenny,

Happy New Year and welcome to Rootschat!!

There was a Leonard Hill aboard the Royal Edward that sailed from Bristol, England, arriving Halifax, Nova Scotia, on March 12, 1913.  Leonard was 21, born England, occupation in the UK was clerk but he intended to farm in Canada.  He was destined to North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

There is also a Leonard Hill, age 22, aboard the Royal Edward that sailed from Avonmouth to Quebec arriving July 8, 1913.  It looks as though he was a clerk in the UK and intended to pursue the same occupation in Canada; religion was C of E.  He was destined for Regina, Saskatchewan.

Do you have Leonard's attestation papers?  Where did he join the CEF?

Susan

Hi
Would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and thanks for all your help
My late grandfather's full name was Leonard Arthur Hill his address on enlistment was 260 Coleman Street Belleville Ontario, there seems to be a mystery with him as he never told his children he came from England they were all led to believe he came from Canada and that their Grand parents, and Aunts and Uncles  were in Canada, when all his family were in England really, he never got in contact with his family and never mentioned they were really in England... he also had different years of birth on his documents etc he was born in 1892 but on his marriage certificate he put he was born in 1897 and on his Army Papers he said he was born in 1894 and born in Wales England when he was born in Chesham Buckinghamshire England
I only found out all this from his Canadian Army Papers..he enlisted in Kingston Ontario in 1917...It makes me wonder if he was married in England or married in Canada before he married my late grandmother.. i would love to solve the mystery

There was a Leonard Hill, age 21, aboard the Scotian which sailed from London, England/Le Havre, France arriving Quebec on June 14, 1914.  He was a gardener (2 years) in the UK and intended to farm in Canada.  He was destined to Belleville, Ontario.  Religion was C of E.

This looks like a possible fit as he gave a Belleville address on his attestation papers.

me again just had a look at free bmd for a marriage for la hill and nothing on there then looked on ancestry and again although there are a lotof l a hill,s the earliest one dated is 1918 so going on your time line it,s not him same with just l hill the dates for a marriage are after your time line again so it looks like your after a canadian marriage unless if he told that many lies he may have done the same in eng perhaps he did leave a wife here could be enough of a reason to go and start a new life else where plenty more did it  .
