Dagenais is a common name in Quebec.

The Victor in the 1871 census for Ripon marries, as a minor, in 1878. His parents are both named as deceased and of the parish, and his occupation is "cultivateur", farmer. His bride is Mélina Desrosiers.

Cheers,
China

The Victor Damase Hector Edgard (wow :D) christened at the Montreal Basilica in 1862 is the son of Ubalde Dagenais and Mathilde Defoix. Ubalde is a menuisier, a carpenter.

If the Victor Dagenais on the 1871 Canadian census married both Melina Desrosiers (in 1878) and Josephine Lapointe (in 1896) then its not "my" Victor as he married Annie Murray in 1884 and lived in New York.  Back to the drawing board!  Thanks for the digging chinakay - at least it rules him out.
JJ thank you so much for the Dagenais lists.  Not sure yet if they tie in but I appreciate the information!

Reading through, again, though I didn't think anyone had discounted Jacquie's find in reply #2, and Debbie's added information in reply #4? ( which DID look as though some digging had been done!)
1871 Census  St-Louis Ward / Montreal East / 105, Quebec
Ubald Dagenais   1818
Mathilde Dagenais 1828
Louisa Dagenais 1850
Afred Dagenais 1852
Mathilde Dagenais 1858
 Henry Dagenais 1860
Victor Dagenais  1862
Anna Dagenais 1864
Maria Dagenais  1865
Archange Defoy 1797
(The baker '81) Hormisdas Dagenais b.1854  lives in the same ward in 1871, as does David (other baker) b 1862

Found in: https://www.familysearch.org/  where that passenger list can also be found...

I didn't think it would be your lot...and that's a shame because I've recently done some French-Canadian genealogy for a friend and could give you Desrosiers back to 1619, the year before the Mayflower sailed to America :D

Mathilde is living with son Alfred & family, a widow, so father has died before the census...children Anna & Maria with her. ( in case they turn out to be yours)
