Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Hi Norrie,

Can you check your Index for Colin Mackie died 2/5/1862 and his wife Janet died 18/03/1884.
If you have any other mackies that would be great.

Also James Greig died 6/09/1867

Thanks Greg

Hi Norrie,

Janet Mackie never married and died in 1917

Isobel Mackie died in 1933 in Thornton. She married Andrew Duff in 1886.

William her son was born in 1869 to unknown father and I have no further details

Andrew was born on 29/10/1878 in Barnyards and died in 1925 in Upper Largo. He married Jessie Thomson

Jemina Mackie never married and died on 15 Nov 1884 in Barnyards

Colin Mackie married Emma Watling in England and remaied there for the rest of his life

Lila Mackie died on 9 Apr 1859 in Barnyards

William Milligan Mackie is my GGGrandfather and married Mary Christie in 1871 in Glenbervie and came to Australia in 1882.

At the time of the 1861 Census Colin Mackie and Janet Greig lived at 9 Back Dykes Kilconquhar with Janets father James

I hope this makes sense and look forward to anything you can help me with

Greg

Hi Norrie,

I’m looking for any headstone of the Lawrie family in Largo & Newburn Cemetery.
Many years ago I looked over the graveyard and only found a couple of stones.
My Lawrie family appears to be the only family of that name in Largo from circa 1840’s onwards.
The family came from Wemyss and moved to Largo after William Lawrie’s first wife Sophia Neish died.
He married Ann Balfour in 1848, Largo.

The lineage is William Lawrie (my direct ancestor)
b.1796, Wemyss
d.1886, Largo
m. Sophia Neish 1818, Wemyss.
I can’t find a death for Sophia but Willie married Ann Balfour 1848, Largo.
Ann Balfour
b.1806, Largo
d.1893, Largo.

The bairns of Willie & Sophia are:
(1) William Lawrie
b.1820 Wemyss.
According to the OPR he married Catherine Lamb 1850, Largo but this has been proved to be incorrect. I cannot find him anywhere.

(2) Margaret Lawrie
b.1825, Wemyss
d.1897, Largo
m. 1843, Largo to Robert Guthrie.

(3) James Lawrie (my direct ancestor)
b.1826, Wemyss.
Died sometime between 1863-67.
James was a merchant seaman and was believed to be drowned at sea.
He married Isabella Sime 1850, Largo.
Isabella died 1912, Largo.

(4) Johan (Hannah) Lawrie
b.1828, Wemyss
d.1910, Largo
m.1849, Largo to James Simpson

(5) Andrew Lawrie
b.1831, Wemyss
d.1881, Largo
unmarried

(6) Agnes Lawrie
b.1834, Wemyss
d.1907, Largo
m.1858, Largo to Alexander Anderson

(7) Catherine Lawrie
b.1837, Wemyss
d.1881, Largo
m.1870, Largo to James Studd

At least seven of the above died in Largo but I have never found a stone.
The only stone I found was to Thomas Lawrie &  Isabella Clunie who is a son of the above (3) James Lawrie.
Do you have anything in your files?

Buckhind

ps I forgot to add that a sister of Willie Lawrie was
Catherine Lawrie
b.1791, Wemyss
d.1855, Temple, Largo
m.1812, Wemyss to George Henderson
Lawrie name in Fife (and elsewhere) with all its various spellings.

Hi Norrie,

Thanks for that.
Those two that you found are not of my tree although I have info on them.
They were interlopers from the Edinburgh area in the 19th century.
Incidentaly their descendant still lives in Kingskettle.

Hi Norrie,

Thanks for that.

87   in memory of Andrew SMITH who died 13.11.1955  age 35 husband of Margaret LAWRIE
I got their marriage in SP but I don’t know who they are.

1   1946   SMITH   ANDREW   LAWRIE   MARGARET WILLIA   LARGO (FIFE)   /FIFE   443/00 0004   No Image

433   Thomas PEARSON died 16.12.1948 age 74
wife Isabella LAWRIE died 15.11.1950 age 75
son James fell in Action July 1918 age 19

Isabella Lawrie was from Newburgh and not one of mine.

540   In Memory of  Effie LAWIE wife of David D GILCHRIST  who died 17.3.1959
This is a strange one.
The previous death you found

469   In Memory of Archibald Alexander LAWRIE died 10.12.1943 age 43 wife Mary ROBERTSON died 26.12.1965 age 65

He had a sister Euphemia Isabella Lawrie who married a Robert Dick Gilchrist in 1923, Lundin Links but she died 17th March, 1952, Largo.
Robert died 1961, Largo.
I cannot find anything on SP on Effie Lawrie & David D Gilchrist.
Very strange.
Are they the same people?
