Completed - Thanks You
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 23:05 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone assist me. I am trying to find a census entry for Mary Hannah Cameron (bon between 1875 & 1878 in Northumberland). Mary Hannah married twice, firstly to Charles Joseph Hamilton in 1898 (divorced in 1918) and then to Robert Carmichael in 1919. I have both marriage certs, both of which list her father as John Cameron (deceased) Engine driver.

I have been trying to locate mary or john (engine driver) on the 1881 and 1891 census returns, but i have not located any entries - Any suggestion?

Also the co respondent listed in the diviorce 1917 / 1918 was Stephen Wharton of Rickergate carlisle, however I cannot find any other details for him.

Kind Regards

Jannet

Assuming father John was still alive in 1881, there is at least one entry of a Mary Cameron with a father named John in the 1881 census but without other evidence you could not say it was your family. I take it from your family tree entry on another site that you don't yet have Mary's birth certificate. If you bought this, it would tell you the mothers Christian name as well as maiden name which would help narrow down any census entries as being 'yours' depending on when father John died. You clearly have the birth entry from Free BMD as you cite 1878 on your tree but this posting says a birth of between 1875 and 1878 so I'm a little confused - do you not think thats the correct birth entry?

Hi Candleflame,

Thanks for the response. I think the birth was in 1878, however the april 1898 marriage cert lists Mary Hannah as being 24, whilst the sept 1919 marriage cert ages her as 42  :-\
The 1901 and 1911 census has her place of birth as Newcastle, however i am not sure if this is correct either.

Oh isn't genealogy such a contradictory pursuit!! I know the feeling though. In my opinion if you are convinced that Mary Hannah Cameron is your relative I'd splash out on the birth certificate - there doesnt seem to be any other Mary Hannah Camerons in the time frame. Could the first age differnece be because she needed to advance her age in order to get married? The 1919 one would then be correct as to a birth date of 1878. Newcastle can sometimes be a shorthand for an area as well as the specific city part , but if you are sure she was born in Northumberland then the 1878 entry looks very likely. The Castle Ward parish which the 1878 entry is located contains places that are very close to the city of Newcastle itself. Some of the names are now close suburbs of newcastle itself but apart from a street sign nowadays, its hard to see where newcastle ends and another area begins.
There are also some possible deaths for John Cameron IF he died in Northumberland in the time frame for 1878 - 1898. If you knew Mary's mums name itd be easier to work out whether they were still around Northumberland to track them down in the various census's.

There is this family in 1881 http://tinyurl.com/39drpao

In 1891, she appears as Mary Hannah 13 and birthplace is given as Walbottle (Northumberland), no parents are present.

Mother may have died 1887 - but Harrington was in Whitehaven district till 1934.
Deaths Mar 1887
CAMERON    Frances    31    Cockermouth    10b   363

Wallbottle was in Castle Ward district :)

Geoff - This sounds very promising as the first marriage was in carlisle.

I will buy the birth certificate and see where that leads.

Please can you give me more detail on the 1891 entry as I cannot locate it?

Many Thanks :-)
