Will administered in London, why?
« on: Monday 03 January 11 21:05 GMT (UK) »
I have a rellie who lived and died in Wales, but his Administration of effects was from London.

I don't know very much about Wills/Admons so would like some idea's on the following:

Is there a reason why it was not done locally?

He was a Minister of Gospel (Calvinistic Methodist), so was surprised he acquired that amount of money/effects £1798 11s 10d  in 1897.
He was 55 when he died.

The Admin was resworn in 1898, amount £1658 11 10d, would I find evidence of this somewhere?

Thanks for keeping my Thread going ;)

I am trying to understand why most Wills/Admons are done locally, then others far away from where the person lived and died.

I am assuming because the word Administration is used that there wasn't a Will to be Probated...... sorry but I am very ignorant regarding this subject.
I also believe that as it's a Administration, I wouldn't learn anymore than what is  stated on Ancestry by sending for a copy. :-[

Below my rellie's Administration there is another one for  a Congregational-minister who lived in Wales and his Probate was in London....do you think that the Clergy had a central body attending to these things?

The letter you received enclosed with the Will sounds intriguing, must have been some bad blood there. Still I have read a few Wills where some nasty comments have been written in the Will it's self.....talk about having the last laugh!

The following may help.

Wills
The National Archives research guides

Wills and Death Duty Records, after 1858

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=219

Wills before 1858:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=220

There is also a help guide on the Rootschat London and Middlesex boards (though it is helpful for understanding wills and the process generally)

A GUIDE TO WILLS IN THE LONDON AREA

Hi Omega,

Not sure, but this appears to have come from the Probate Office in case of any dis-agreement, and is guiding you to where you can seek help....which is not from them.

I am ploughing through the Links Silligen has kindly provided, but I still can't work out if he left something in writing for it to be an Administration of his effects :o :D :-[
