Young, O'Connor's
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 22:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've been asked by my mother in law to look into her family tree for her, Her mother was Winifred Young, who had a cousin (I think) Art O Connor who was a judge. The family came from Elm Hall in Celbridge. ~Anyone out there with a bit more information, I would appreciate it.
Many thanks
Julie

Welcome to Rootschat. It would help if you could give us an idea of dates. There are lots of Irish resources online, many of them free such as 1901 and 1911 census records, which you can check but recent information is not likely to be available online and Rootschat has a 'no living people' policy.
Have a look at this topic and then let us know how we can help you.

could this family on the 1911 census be connected to your Youngs and O'Connors ?

O'Connor household - townland of Loughlinstown

The household consists of Elizabeth O'Connor and her sons and daughters plus her grandchild Ellen Young. The townland of Loughlinstown is adjacent to the townland of Elmhall.

there's a article on Irish politician, lawyer and judge Art. O'Connor from 'Elm Hall' on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_O%27Connor

The occupation of 'B A BE TCD Civil Engineer and Architect' for Arthur on the 1911 census, fits with the details of the Wikipedia article.

My grandfather was a senior civil servant in the Dept. of Agriculture around the time Art was Secretary for Agriculture - and could have worked with Art at some point.

Haven't seen any photo's of Art online, but I'd say there could be some hidden away on a webpage somewhere ..

Found a mention of what I think is his younger sister Frances in another post here on RootsChat - see Cumann na mBan member list?

Fanny O'Connor, Elm Hall, Cellbridge, Co Kildare

for details on the organization see :

If you want to work out the connection between the Young and O'Connor families, you could start by checking for a birth of Eileen Young for details of her parents. There's a good possible match at the right time and in the right area on the BMD Index :

 Name: Eileen Mary Young
 Registration District: Celbridge
 Event Type: Birth
 Quarter and Year : Oct-Dec 1908
 volume : 2 / page : 350

A couple of details from 1901 census :

  O'Connor family, Loughlinstown
Arthur (jnr) at school    (Blackrock College, Co. Dublin)

Elm Hall on the OSI maps - link
Select the 25" option to see the c1890s map, or the 6" option to see older 1820-1840 maps

According to the maps, the house of Elm hall was originally on the east of the road and in the townland of the same name, but at some point before the 1890s a new house named Elm Hall was built on the other side of the road and in the townland of Loughlinstown.
