Hello all,

Are there records of Marriages in bathgate that can be looked up ie marriages .

I would dearly love to find the marriages of my ANDERSON  Girls if at all possible

I did look thru  a parish reister film some years back to no avail.

were there records kept as to where people lived other than the Census?

As I dont know married names I can not use the census!!!!!!!!!!!

From memory I can recall being told they were all still in Bathgate which is
frustrating when you can not find them.
Most of the boys were coal miners.so they may have moved for work.

Any help appreciated .

Hi Margaret

It is always hard when searching for clues like these, specially with a common surname. As you have likely seen, the records prior to 1855 are from the Old Parish Registers which in the main include minimal information. Your best bet would be to try and find records post the start of official registration where the information included in the certs. was more comprehensive.

Just a quick look around in Bathgate on the OPRs brings up, for example, this marriage entry:

James Davidson and Mary Anderson: marriage on 14 April 1854 in Bathgate

I can only see three children for them on IGI, all in Bathgate:

1 Margaret DAVIDSON Birth: 09 JAN 1858
2. Alexander DAVIDSON Birth: 03 DEC 1861
3. Margaret DAVIDSON Birth: 12 MAY 1866

Can't see them in 1861 (what's new, eh!), but this entry might be the family in 1871 - everyone is showing as born in Bathgate:

James Davidson 41, labourer
Mary Davidson 40
Alexander Davidson 9
Margaret Davidson 4

Address: 13 Engine St Lane, Bathgate

It is only a possibility for Mary born c. 1840. If this Mary died in Scotland, her death cert would let you confirm her parents' names hopefully.

Hello Monica,

Thanks for that I will follow it thru and see if it is mine!!!!!!
I have the anderson family in 1841 and 1851 and apparently they were missed in the 1861 Census hence the gap and not knowing who was married and who wasnt ?????

In NZ we have electoral rolls which are very helpful we dont have the census records kept hence my querie regarding other forms of identification.

Regards
margaret.

Hi Margaret,I have just been give  a 1901 census for my great grandfather George McBride.Aged 18 he is living at 28 Hopetown Lane with his cousins Andrew Anderson aged 19 and Catherine Anderson aged 16.I don't know yet by which marriage they came to be cousins,I can only assume by the marriage of a McBride girl to an Anderson. All were born in Bathgate.Do you know any of your Andersons that were still in bathgate when these would have been born,1880's.

Hi George,

I have just had a quick look on Ancestry at the census.
the 1901 gives catherine as the wife of andrew ?
looked on 1891 to see if i could match parents.
Found an Andrew and Mary  with Children
Agnes 17
Mary 13
Lizzie 11
Helen 9
Andrew 7
Catherine 5
Isabella 3

the ages for andrew and catherine fit in with the ages of your andrew and catherine.
Couldnt find a catherine mcbride so may be it is Mary Mcbride who married andrew Anderson snr.
Sadly they dont fit with my Anderson family.

Margaret.

Hi Margaret,I should add I don't know what relationship Andrew and Catherine were but George is named as their cousin.Info I had was:-

1901 Hopetown Lane Bathgate
Andrew Anderson 19
Catherine Anderson 16
George McBride 18 cousin

Ah well Andersons to track now,I just wondered if perhaps they were yours at all.

Thanks george,
I would be looking for a Mary McBride marrying and Andrew Anderson as that may be your connection.

The Family are in Bathgate in 1891.

Margaret.

Margaret, not a lot we can do about the changes with the LDS databases but regarding Ancestry, you can choose to have either the new search or old search screen (I haven't moved away from the old search format).

Monica
I have just found the 'Original' version option !

And isn't it much more straightforward to search from this screen, Billy!
