Checking the 1865 map I wondered of "Benwell Grange" might be the area around Benwell Tower, just South of Benwell Lodge.
Suggest you google Benwell Tower, not Benwell Grange.

regards

I'll follow that one up, many thanks.  I get the impression that the expansion of Newcastle has pretty well swallowed up the houses named in the census.

I only have modern OS maps of Northumberland, as it's a favourite holiday destination, but I'm sure I can lay my hands on an older version.  It's amazing how many mysteries the old maps can solve.

The only Benwell grange I know was a rehabilitation home set up by miss Jane Cowen of Stella hall  for the wounded Sailors and soldiers, however I am yet to find the location

Thank you for this. I'll see what I can dig up. I've had a rest from this search for a while, but it's time I got to grips with it again.

Warkworth,

Hello once again!!
From The Newcastle Courant, 23 Dec 1916 -

"Through the liberality of Miss Cowen of Stella Hall, who gave £2,500 in memory of her father and mother, a training school for maimed Soldiers and sailors was established at Benwell Grange and in recognition of this gift the trustees caled the institution the Joseph and Jane Cowen Home
                                               At Benwell Grange
"..... a fine old roomy mansion, little more than a stone's throw from the Elswick Road tram terminus ....."

Wow, thank you!  As it happens, I'm going to be in the area in October. I'll try to take a wander round.
