pupil at donaldson's school for the deaf
« on: Friday 07 January 11 15:34 GMT (UK) »
My 3x great grandfather was born in Maxton Roxburghshire in 1846. I can find him in the 1851 census in Roxburghshire and in the 1871 census. However the only record of a Henry Rutherford in the 1861 census is for the deaf school in Edinburgh. His age is correct but his birth place is given as Edinburgh. Does anyone know where I might find the school records to see if there is any clue to his identity or any suggestions as to where he might have gone in 1861.

seeing as the school still exists perhaps easiest just to contact them and ask?  im sure they could tell you about their archives etc?

It appears they are currently creating a virtual museum of deaf history which looks fascinating!

Can you find his family on the 1851 and 1861 census?

thanks Ails and Sancti
Will follow up the Donaldsons lead although I am becoming less convinced my Henry Rutherford was there despite not appearing anywhere else in the 1861 census.
As for the 1851 census the family are living at Mountiviot in Roxburghshire, Henry is there as a 4 year old.
In the 1861 census the family are living at Darnick near Melrose but no sign of Henry.
In none of the census returns where Henry is listed is noted as being deaf.

His occupation in 1871 was Gardeners Labourer. His marriage cert. in 1863 says his Occupation is Coach Builder, in !869 he is an Engine Smith , but sometime after 1870 he becomes a gardener which he stays with till his death.
