Kerry and the IGI
« on: Friday 15 April 05 10:07 BST (UK) »
I've found my g/grandmother at long last in Ireland
Admittedly a rather garbled entry on the IGI and a sheer fluke that I found her: I was looking for the birth of a Sarah Dorothy Townsend about 1890-1900, so did a blanket search

06 Aug 1859 Dronnore, Kerry, Ireland  (my note - Dromore, Kenmare, Co Kerry)

Sarah Townsend
father John McClure Townsend
Mother,  Catherine O'Meary
Batch no 6940410
Source Margret, type Book

 it should read:

Sarah O'Meara
Father John O'Meara
Mother, Catherine McClure
(Sarah married Francis Townsend in Scotland 1879)

John Marah/Meara was a Land Steward on Sarah's marriage cert

I tried christian name variations on the batch # looking for other family members but it brings up records from all over UK.

So any suggestions as to what the "book" might have been? Or any other suggestions ???
regards, Sylvia

Sylvia,

Isn't your question answered on the IGI?

It reads (for Sarah's entry and for every other entry in the batch):
"Message:
LDS Church membership record of a deceased person. The original records cannot be sent to family history centers. The records of members who died before 1988 can be viewed at the Family History Library. These records cannot be photocopied. Information for members who died after 1988 is available only on the Internet version of the IGI. Married women may be indexed under their maiden or married surnames.

Early LDS Church ward or branch records. The entry may be hard to find because the source does not have a page number index and because the names, dates, and places may be different on the film than in the IGI entry."

And every entry in the batch has the following Source information:
"Batch Number:  6940410
Sheet:  00
Source Call No.:  MARGET     Type:   Book"

Your local LDS FHC might be able to help you further but, from the message, it seems that this is unlikely.  I was unable to locate the source call number in the Library Catalogue at FamilySearch.

The following site should be of interest to you:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/rg/Guide/Membersh.ASP
It refers to a Membership Card Index by a Minnie Marget.  Clicking on that brings up a reference to the Library Catalogue as follows:
1. Historian's Office record of members : known as the "Minnie Margetts" file
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church Historian's Office [261771]

Just an update on this message.

I sent off a query through the Genfindit lookup people for this birth in Co Kerry ..I thought at the time it was quite expensive, but they have come up with the goods...only a baptism transcript as it was from early records but well worth it . Illigitimate birth
I will be using them again...and they only took a week.

Another interesting bit is that I've found an illigitimate  birth in May 1857 for the same name, Sarah Jane, same mother Catherine McClure, it was registrered in Glasgow in July 1858

...which if the same baby would make her over 2 year old at baptism in Co Kerry in 1859, is this feasible do you think in a Catholic church?
