Have you checked UK Incoming Passenger Lists. Ancestry is a good place to look for these lists. There is a Matilda Chalmers listed arriving in Glasgow, Scotland. I don't have a membership so can't look further.

None of the Matilda Chalmers, Raymond or McKinnons that come up in the results of searches of the incoming UK passenger list database match.

Hi,

I have James Webster Chalmers birth certificate - no father is mentioned and íllegitamately' is shown after James's name. He was born on 15/10/1896 at Dowanside, Innerleithen, County of Peebles and mother's name shown as 'Christina McCulloch Chalmers - Domestic Servant'.

I have just come across a Border Crossing Port of Buffalo New York - Canada to U.S. 1895-1956 - Sheet No. 13 '- Form 1 Canada - it reads -

'List Off Manifest Of Alien Passengers Applying For Admission - Port of Buffalo New York'

Matilda McKinnon, aged 53, Single. Housekeeper. Scotch, permanent address Toronto,
it shows also under what appears to be 'n/a of relatives in country from which came'..
'Bro., Angus McKinnon, 189, Fulton Avenue, Toronto. Ont.,' there are two columns after that the headings of which are unclear but show in 1st column 'N.Y.' and the 2nd. 'Van Ethen'. As it is a photocopy of the document there are parts unclear and no date of entry can be seen.

Regards,

Alister

Hi Alister,

Regarding reply #21...

I see an Angus McKinnon at 189 Fulton Avenue in the 1922 Toronto Directory.  A few doors down at 197 Fulton there is an Archd McKinnon.  Did Matilda have a brother Angus or Archibald?

I don't know if this link to the entry on the directory will work
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0b6b/

What year was the border crossing you found for a Matilda McKinnon?  For whatever reason, I can't seem to bring it up.

Susan

Edited to add:  There is a Jessie McKinnon (wid John) living at 62 Beatrice on the 1922 Toronto Directory.

Hi,

I'm not a member of Ancestry.Com but I'must have got it there using a friends access - just checked it just now and it's under

'Borrder Crossings From Canada to US - 1895-1956' - shows Port of Arrival as 'Buffalo"

Don't have any further details of Matilda's family.
