Hi Snowolf,
Just a quick note to say that there are several Durwards buried in the cemetry at Bervie/gourdon.  I noted this when I was on one of my trips there.  Don't know if this helps any....  :D

Hi There

With reference to postings from "angusg" and "jeanp" some of my forebears are buried in the churchyard at Benholm.

There is a headstone to my GGG Grandfather Charles Beattie (died 1871) and his second wife Elizabeth Smith. My line come from his first marriage to Jean Ford. She gave birth her one child, Jonathan my GG Grandfather in 1850 a few years before her death in 1852 aged 32. The family lived as tennant farmers in "brawliemuir" farm not far from the church from around 1810 until some time after 1871.

I don't know if Jean Ford is buried in the churchyard, although there is a J Ford marked on the plan to the SE of the church near the wall.

It was good to find out from "angusg" that my GGGG Grandparents William Beattie and Isobel Kennedy are also buried there. Although I can't see where from the churchyard plan.

If anyone has any further information that would be great.

Regards
Bill

Hi Angus

I'm new to rootchat. I posted a message last week on the "Benholm" pages about my forebears, William my GGGG Grandfather And Charles Beattie My GGG Grandfather. Charles is buried at Benholm Churchyard and there is a headstone. Please check my other post and if you have any additional details that would be great.

Regards

Bill

I'm totally new to this forum and I've been browsing the messages in this thread.  Johnshaven, Benholm and the whole coastal strip from St Cyrus to Bervie marks out the playground of my youth.
I'm currently researching the FREEMAN families of this area.  I'm the son of Mary Freeman, youngest daughter of Walter FREEMAN & Isabella ADAM of Johnshaven who married 27:8:1898.  With the help of a cousin I have traced my Freeman line back to John FREEMAN m. Isobel JEAMIE 1:4:1681.
I have a brickwall I would like to get over regarding Alexander FREEMAN b. 1691 baptised BERVIE 30:8:1691.  Between 1713 and 1728 he fathered six children. Bervie OPR lists him as FISHERMAN in GOURDON.  The Clerk registering the baptisms never once recorded the name of the mother.
Searching for a marriage in Scotlandspeople from Kinneff to St Cyrus shows only one marriage, Alexander m. Elspet CORMAK in Kinneff in 1725 which is too late for all but the last child born 1728.
Hoping for an MI in either Benholm or Bervie that far back is a vain hope I think.  Some of you on this forum seem to have access to MIs for both locations.  I was unaware that these had been published by anyone!
Any suggestions.
Thanks in in advance.
Sandy P.

Hi, this is my first post here too.  I am following the family of James GORDON b 29 June 1755 Benholm who married Jean MORRICE b 11 January 1754.  They had six children and I am wondering if by chance there is a family grave at Benholm.  John Strachan Gordon was their first child in 1781.  Did you purchase your MI book from ANESFHS.

Sorry for the delay in replying Sandy,

Unfortunately I don't have any record of any Freeman graves in Benholm.

There's no Gordon graves but quite a few Morrices and variations if you have any more details on that side.

Thanks for the response Jean, my request was a long shot anyway.  Those I'm looking for are most likely in BERVIE.
I recall on a visit a few years back that Bervie Library had an unpublished folio of MIs.  Does anyone know if these have been published and offered for sale?
I suppose I should ask ANESFHS about that.
On a visit to Benholm Kirk I recall a map of the graveyard showing MIs and locations. That was also a few years back when there was the appeal by the Redundant Churches when I made a contribution in the name of my parents who were married there, I photographed the map in sections but following a careless computer error I lost it along with photos taken in the graveyards of both Benholm and Bervie.
Has anyone managed to publish the map -- I for one would purchase a copy.

Cheers,
Sandy

No, as far as I am aware the map has not been published. It is this map that I am using along with my own transcriptions. One problem with the map is that the names shown on the map are those of the purchaser of the plot and  not of the deceased.

Also the map does not show all the gravestones, as I have found a couple that do not appear on it. I have  not managed to do much transcribing this past year as I have been ill, but weather permitting I will be back onto this project as soon as possible!!

Jean
p.s. The Bervie gravestones were transcribed by Bervonian I believe.
