COMPLETED WITH THANKS Where did they go after 1871?
« on: Sunday 09 January 11 07:38 GMT (UK) »
I can't find this family after the 1871 census.

Daniel Hawker b 1843, Southam, Gloucestershire (GLS) (parents George & Eliza)
Sarah Hawker (nee Mas(s)on) b 1840, Minchinhampton, GLS (mother's maiden name - Legg)
Charles (Charlie) G. b 1871, Woodmancote, Bishops Cleeve, GLS
Roseland b 1872 Woodmancote, Bishops Cleeve, GLS

Daniel and Sarah m. 1867 Cheltenham GLS and lived at Farm House, Bishops Cleeve, GLS.

I can't find any record of them in 1881 or 1891.
I've trawled through the digital images of deaths recorded from 1871-1881 without finding any of them.
I've tried marriage for Roseland - no luck.

So have they emigrated? If so, can anyone find out where?

Cheers,
Alison  :-\  :-\  :-\

A mention of Daniel Hawker in 1885 - working in a quarry near Christchurch http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=TS18850806.2.23

The article also quotes Stephen Stanton whose family was also on the Ocean Mail in 1874

That's my man.

Stonemasonry ran in the family, although I've only seen him as a labourer.

Thank you very much, ShaunJ  ;D

He was a stone mason in in the 1861 and 1871 censuses - so I went looking for "daniel hawker stonemason"

My excitement's getting to me, I'd only checked my transcripts and not my original images.

Bub born on way was named "Ocean Annie", a name she kept and in fact named one of her daughters.
