At the moment I can't see a definite emigration for Hugh, although there is one which I think you should keep to one side for the moment - 30th July 1891 an 18 year old Hugh Hill departed from Liverpool to Boston on board the Cephalonia

Spidermonkey, that is great work there you have done - I've been following it all afternoon  ;) Should get the brain cells up and running after your illness (poor you, hope you are better now  :)).

Looking at another passenger manifest, this time for Sept 1924, it looks as if Donald was an attending Dulwich College, which might have admissions records in their archives which may mention parentage.

Dulwich College have extensive 'old boy' records and will hopefully be able to assist. Maybe contact the Registrar - email details on their website.

Monica  :)

Thanks Monica - do you think my logic is holding up?  I really hope I haven't sent FR down the wrong route!

Dulwich College should be a port of call I think - after all, someone must have been paying the bills  ;)

Just a little bit more on Ronald Pretty Hill:

HILL, MR. ROLAND PRETTY, the cartoonist known as Rip, died in London on December 29, aged 83. He was the first line artist to concentrate on cricket and his drawings of players appeared in the London Evening News and many magazines.

Hugh had brothers and sisters of his aunt Isabel Walton (who m. CharlesHiam in the UK) in the USA. He may have gone to see them in Cincinnati/Philadelphia before he went to Canada.
Does this help?

Gosh, my head is in a spin.

According to this, the first match H C HIll played was in July 1890 for Montreal http://www.cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/186/186967/Other_matches.html

Therefore, he should be on the 1891 canada census...........right  :-\
