McTiernan
« on: Monday 10 January 11 19:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

this is a difficult one I know but fingers crossed maybe someone can help me please, my g-g-grandfather and his wife I have been told may have been married in Leitrim, the area is not known, they were Peter McTiernan and Ann McNiff, their son Peter my g-grandfather may also have been born there.

They are known to have moved to Strathaven in Lanrkshire Scotland and worked on the farms. My g-grandfather Peter died in Winchburgh West Lothian in Scotland aged 77 years so he was born around 1855, I would asume that his parents were married just before that, I have no idea if there were any other siblings.

I have also been told that they moved to a place called Stonehouse, from there I asume my g-grandfather moved to Midlothian Edinburgh as he was on the Census with his family, he married Bridgit Owens who was from Irish descendants but she was born in Edinburgh City.

I have tried Scotland People to find my g-g-grandparents but with no success. I have also tried to search on the same site for my G-Grandfather's birth again with no success, this then leads me to believe they all came from Ireland, I am hoping that it was Leitrim.

Any help in this difficult request would be gratefully accepted.

Best regards.

Archie.

Well it depends on their religion, Protestant marriage records started 20 years earlier than RC.

Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 (Catholic records 19 years later in 1864). However, registration of all births and deaths started in 1864 (regardless of religion)
