WINSTANLEY- Bolton area
« on: Tuesday 11 January 11 15:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find an Ellen Winstanley in the 1851 and 1861 census, probably in the Bolton area. She was born in 1844, and her father was possibly John Winstanley.
Many thanks, Maggie.

Cant see one living with a Dad called John, but there is one with mum in Bolton, though a little older, and one with grandparents elsewhere in Lancashire.

What else do you know about her? Have yuo got her on later censuses? Where did dad's name come from? a marriage cert? if so what was his occupation, and when and where and who did Ellen marry, and have you got her on censuses after her marriage, if so where did she say she was born?
(sorry - what a lot of questions!)

The one in Bolton in 1851 - age 10 with widowed mother Elizabeth - appears to have a Dad called John, as the family are also in Bolton in1841 as John 25, Betty 24 and Ellen age 1, under Winstandley.

Thanks for your help Liz.
I only know of Ellen through her marriage to the Carabine family I am tracing. She married John in 1862, but the marriage appears to have foundered, as she remarried in 1883. I am hoping to try and trace any other Winstanley siblings that Ellen may have had, in particular whether she had a sister called Mary. So I am hoping that someone can find Ellen's family in 1861 before she got married.
Maggie

Father's occupation looks like overlooker, but may well be overlocker.
So the 1861 census looks like a good fit, especially having a sister called Mary.
Have you got 1871 census for that family to see if Mary is still at home?
If this Mary is correct I am looking for her marriage and hoping it is to an Atkinson!
Thanks Maggie
