Patrick W. McGetrick Sligo & Maggie Woods Cootehill
« on: Tuesday 11 January 11 23:57 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone has information from a family of Woods from Cootehill. Maggie Woods married a Patrick McGetrick in 1894 Patrick was a draper and  from Armagh and Maggie A. Woods moved to Armagh and they had a shop in English street in Armagh and later to Belfast.

Patrick and Maggie were married in Cootehill in Drumgoon parish church where Joesph Lennon and Theodora Woods were witnesses.  Can anyone offer some help please

The marriage certificate should list the bride's residence as well as her father's name and occupation. Both the 1901 and 1911 census are online (free) and you can search for Woods (surname) under Cootehill (D.E.D.) to see if you recognise any of the people listed there-

Thanks both the bride and the groom are over 21 and the parents names and occupations do not appear on the marriage record. The only address is Drumgoon.

The parish church is still there I believe.

thanks again

is the marriage record you have a parish transcript or a civil cert ?

Civil certs usually have more detail, including residences of the bride & groom, fathers, occupations etc

see :  Details included on a Marriage Cert

Looking at childrens places birth it looks to me as though after they married, the family went first to Co. Antrim (which includes much of Belfast) for 2 years before moving to Armagh around 1896.

By 1911 they are in Belfast, probably for at least 4 years. Possibly there was a side-trip to Leitrim too, as Anthony was born there c 1903.

Griffiths Valuation has several Woods listed in Drumgoon parish. 2 mentions of a James Woods in Drumaveil North, and another in Church St, Magheranure townland. Also an Ellen Woods in Magheranure.

Thanks Elwyn

I got the Deramore Ave connection in 1911 and the English street connection in 1901. I suppose the real problem is not having the parents names for Maggie a. There is a Joesph Lennon in the 1911 census in Cootehill in the parish of Drumgoon who may be the witness in the marriage. Since Patrick McGetrick came from Sligo it is likely that Joesph Lennon is a relative of Maggie Woods and in 1911 he is 42 ,a contemporary of Maggie's and maybe a cousin.

I'll check out the Griffith evaluation

Thanks

Des,

I would recommend you also check out Shane's suggestion. It's pretty unusual to have a marriage cert which doesn't give father's names and fuller addresses for either party. I think you've probably got a copy of the cert the priest gave them, whereas the full civil register entry should give you more family information. You can get a photocopy for €4 from GRO Roscommon, so it's worth checking out. (Irish records can be thin on the ground, as you've probably discovered, and so you need to pursue every slender lead).

Agree with Shane and Elwyn about getting a copy of the civil certificate.
