Looking for marriages
« on: Wednesday 12 January 11 19:12 GMT (UK) »
Happy New Year to everyone.

I am looking for possible marriages for 2 of my ancestors and wondered if anyone could help me please?

Their names were Louisa Harriett Leech b. 1864 Islington and Mary Louisa Leech b. 1866 Islington.

Their father was a William Henry Leech.

I have only found them in the 1871 census when Louisa was 5 and Mary was 6.

Addresses I know the family lived at were Old Norfolk Street/Halton Cross Street and Powercroft Road.  They could have married in Islington or Hackney or maybe elsewhere!

I wonder if anyone has access to marriage records that might possibly find them with their fathers name or about the right sort of ages please?

There father was a Carpenter if occupations are mentioned.

I look forward to any help, THANK YOU.

Have you checked freebmd for likely marriages - there is nothing listed on the London marriages

Ignore the Louisa Harriet marriage in Yarmouth in 1889 - she married Jermyn and I checked the 1891 - she was b Yarmouth

I found a marriage for William Henry Leech in 1854 in Woolwich to a Sarah Ann Vincent. Would that be the parents? He is listed as a carpenter.

Have tried looking for a marriage for the sisters no luck.

Hi

Was their father William Henry, bc1840, the son of George (of Dunmore, Essex) & Louisa LEECH (of Homerton)?

George was a carpenter

1861 Census Ref: RG9 144 21 46

1851 & 1841 also show up; shout if you want the details.

In which case this may be the re-marriage of William Henry:

22nd November 1880
St Luke's Church, Hackney, after Banns

William Henry LEECH
Full Age
Widower
Builder
Wick Road
Father: George LEECH, carpenter

Eliza Mary JACKSON
Full Age
Widow
Wick Road
Father: Samuel CLARK, agent

William signed; Eliza made her mark X
Witnesses: George LEECH; Eliza Mary ?ROWE?

Still can't see them in later censuses.....

That marriage looks good but if it is him - he didn't waste much time did he?

Deaths June qtr 1880

Mary Leech  38  Hackney  1b 519

The witness on the 1880 marriage cert would have to be George snr as son George was only 12yrs old at that time

Hi Carole, no I don't think they did hang around back in the day, widows or widowers  ;D  Young children in the house, economic necessity, etc.

I wonder if they emigrated?  Or all died?  Are there bits of the census missing or they're horribly mistranscribed?

There is a possibility for son George lodging in the ROOT family household, Sutton, in the 1891:

Ok, I've taken a wander down Wick Road, Hackney in the 1881 and I can see

RG11 316 10 14
89 Wick Road, Hackney
William L? ? ? ? Head Mar 41 carpenter b Middlesex, Islington
Eliza Wife 52 b Middlesex, ?Hoxton?
George Son 12 b Middlesex, Islington

FindMyPast & Ancestry both have them transcribed as TUCK  ::) , but I'm not surprised as the writing is pretty ropey.

The girls don't seem to be in the household......  :-\

The girls would have been around 15 and 16 in 1881, so probably to young to be married, but old enough for service.  Cranstone, have you traced Mary's family, the Taylors, this far?  Could they be with one of her siblings or one of William's siblings?

Father Edward Taylor b1811-14 was a widower in the Islington workhouse in 1881 RG11 280 95 44 so they're not with their grandmother Amey.
