1891 Census lookup please - WATTS
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 08:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody,

I was wondering if someone would mind chasing up a census for me.

I'm interested in this WATTS family, living in St Giles, London. Here they are in the the 1901 census:

4 Parker Street, Bloomsbury and St Giles South, London
All born London St Giles
Charles Watts Head M 42 Shoe Maker (Cutter)
Eliza Wife M 41
Eliza daur S 17 Shop Girl (Boot Warehouse)
Arthur Son 8
Jessy daur 6
Matilda daur S 14
RG13; Piece: 238; Folio: 90; Page: 1

(from earlier thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,248134.msg1366097.html)

Since that earlier thread, I have identified that this is the family I am interested in. However, back then, MaryA couldn't find them on the 1891, and suggested that Charles could have married Eliza after 1891 and Eliza and Matilda could have assumed his name.

However, I found Charles and Eliza (Snr) on the 1911 census [ RG14 PN1182 RG78 PN39 RD12 SD1 ED13 SN180], and it says that they had been married since 1882.

I was wondering if anybody would mind having another quick look for them on the 1891. It looks to me like they'd almost certainly be in the St Giles area.

Thanks,

TN

Hi all

A tricky lot to pin down, aren't they?!!

All I can come up with are baptisms for two other children (one of whom seems to have died before 1901):

Holy Trinity, Kingsway, Camden
Born 9th Feb 1897
Bapt 28th July 1897
Alice Annie daughter of Charles & Eliza WATTS of 4 Parker St, Drury Lane; father's occ: boot repairer

Death: Alice WATTS aged 0
Jun Qtr 1898 Holborn Vol 1b Page 409

Added: or could be Alice WATTS aged 0
Sep Qtr 1897 St Giles Vol 1b Page 397

Holy Trinity Kingsway, Camden
Born 22nd Sept 1901
Bapt 13th Oct 1901
Helen Susan daughter of Charles & Eliza WATTS of 4 Parker St; father's occ: boot finisher

Based on the baptisms, the only birth regs that I'm sure about are these:

Mar Qtr 1897
St Giles Vol 1b Page 668
Alice Annie WATTS

Dec Qtr 1901
St Giles Vol 1b Page 591
Helen Susan WATTS

It would be interesting to see what mmn was on those certs.

There is also a possibility for Arthur:

Jun Qtr 1893
St Giles Vol 1b Page 631
Arthur WATTS

Hi everyone,

Thanks to Trevor, Suz and Maryam for having a look for these elusive Wattses.

In answer to the questions, I don't have definitive marriage dates for Charles and Eliza, or births for Eliza and (especially) Matilda.

I've had a closer look at the actual 1911 Census image - it definitely says that Charles and Eliza had been married for 29 years, and that they'd had ten children, with seven surviving. Additionally, Eliza's marriage certificate lists Charles as her father. However, these wouldn't be the first inaccuracies I've encountered.

To progress more, I think I need the mother's maiden name off some of those later certs. Hopefully that will help me find the marriage (either before or after the birth of Eliza and Matilda) and then move back from there.

Thanks again for your help. Any other suggestions/findings etc always welcome. I'll post here again once the cert arrives!

Hi Ray,

Yup - I think that's Jessy whose in the 1901 census. Seems like the most likely candidate for Arthur too. Thanks!

Hi

Just be aware that a Jessie Jane Emily WATTS was baptised as follows:

St George the Martyr, Queen Square
Born 12th August 1895
Bapt 8th July 1896
Jessie Jane Emily daughter of Henry & Hepzibah WATTS of 9 Boswell Court; father's occ: porter

So the birth registration reference found above is probably not your Jessy.
