Sorry  ------ MA is state of Massachusettes  (hope I spelled that right --  so rarely do spell it out!  Duh!)

Good luck with the rest of your search.

Hi Liz,  went back to look @ 1930 census --  few details

William used middle initial "H" --  William H. Hughes
Age when married is 38 (not 30 --  census taker's handwriting awful!)
Maude with an "e".  Father was Canada English, Mother I think Canada English --  definately not French, but maybe some other variable --  again handwritting problem.

I looked for Wm. H. in 1920 when he should have been married and had 2 (twins?!) if not 3 children --  nothing.
Also looked for Maude Rebecca Clark in 1900, 1910, 1920 --  nothing.
Looked for immigration record --  nothing.  Immigration thru Canada is difficult to trace (have similar situation in my family).  If you weren't staying Canada but in route to US they didn't take much notice (until after 1915 when U.S laws tightened.)

If you think of anything else that you want checked -- let me know.

Hi Kathy,
Thank you once again, I tried finding information in America but became confused
with the different states , and within them counties? Also social security numbers
are they used to identify people?.

I was surprised  to learn you can look at a census for 1920, there the 100 year rule here.

Its seems strange that there is a gap in the information, what about death records I think he died 1976 aged 96years.

Would it be possible to trace any of the children, although that information usaually
found in the census?

The story is William  went to America in search of his father who he believed was there his mother had told him his father was dead, however for some reason he did not  believe her.
He must have had  strong reasons to think someone in America and follow them I would have thought

The farthers name was William ,however on some records he called Richard.
he did not appear on the records for either 1881 and 1891 when William and his mother plus  siblings were in a workhouse so may be he went to America after William birth in 1881 Could you look for me please I know its a long shot
